Job Summary

A physician-scientist who studies cardiovascular diseases, with an emphasis on genetics and precision health, is seeking a project intermediate manager position to join a growing research program funded by NIH and substantial intramural commitments. The research program relies on enrollment and study of human subjects as well as the use of national, federally-produced research datasets that require unique and complex data use agreements and collaborative interactions with co-investigators across multiple institutions.

  • Manage research projects, including intramural collaborations such as with central biorepository infrastructure and collaborations across external organizations, data organization and assistance with manuscript preparation communications and formatting
  • Under general direction, maintain effective and transparent documentation by developing detailed work plans, schedules, study plans, progress reports
  • Effectively gathers and communicates regulatory requirements and manage the data use agreement process
  • Plans and conducts effective project meetings.  Prepares documented communication planning and presentations for a variety of audiences including funders and external collaborators
  • Provides strategic implementation guidance to the project team
  • Develop and manage a strategic communication plan for investigators and stakeholders and effectively communicates project progress to all stakeholders according to established timelines
  • Identifies and assesses issues and interdependencies within and across projects
  • Under general guidance, manages the integration of team-members’ tasks and deliverables
  • Establishes and maintains a collaborative relationship with project teams across multiple grants and with research collaborators across multiple institutions 
  • Identifies opportunities to improve work flow as the project team grows
  • Share with and learn from other colleagues
  • Other duties as assigned dependent on research program needs

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  PhD level applicants are encouraged to apply
  • At least 2 years of considerable progressively responsible experience in some form of project management
  • Knowledge of project management processes from project planning at the grant writing stage, all the way to publication and dissemination of findings
  • Knowledge of strategic planning, risk management, and change management
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong relationship-building skills, and understanding of collaborative, multidisciplinary team functioning
  • Ability to work collaboratively and demonstrate adaptability and commitment to embracing change within ambiguous environments
  • Experience with data analysis and data presentation
  • Detail-oriented and able to bring structure to an unstructured environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to write about and summarize scientific concepts for both scientific and non-scientific audiences
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with multiple team members
  • Experience with information management software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and use of social media and website management tools

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, health care administration, or research administration; Master's degree or PhD in a scientific research discipline would be favored
  • 3-5 years of experience in a project management role in federally-funded research environment
  • Understanding of health care and exposure to the use of secondary data include administrative billing date for research
  • Experience with preparation of data use agreements and Institutional Review Board applications

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
