Job Summary

The Opportunity 
To join a growing, vibrant Ambulatory Psychiatric Services in a leading Academic Medical Center, providing state-of-the-art, empirically-grounded psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic care in a regional center of excellence.  The focus of this position is on provision of high quality care directly to patients, with potential opportunities to work in general evaluation clinics and/or in a variety of specialty programs (e.g., Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Perinatal Psychiatry).  We strongly support ongoing education and skill development.  We are also developing a post-graduate, APP Fellowship – for more senior clinicians, there may be future opportunities to help develop, teach and supervise within it.  We are interested in both young and “up-and-coming” talent, and in more experienced applicants with leadership aspirations.

Responsibilities*

To provide health care and specialized psychiatric services to individuals and supportive services to their families within the Department of Psychiatry in an ambulatory setting; to provide educational experiences for health care professionals; to participate in development, implementation, evaluation, and outcome monitoring. 

Organizational Relationships and Practice Environment: 

  • General supervision for PAs will be received from the Ambulatory Psychiatry Medical Director or designee.
  • General supervison for NPs will be received from the Clinical Nursing Director.
  • Guidance and support is received from senior APPs and Psychiatrists
  • We maintain a highly collaborative environment and Collaborative/Consultative relationships are maintained with other care providers, clinicians, disciplines, and departments, including program directors and attendings.
  • We use a team-based approached and APPs become critical members of teams that match their interests and need their skills. 

Patient Care / Assessment of Medical/Psychiatric Status 

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and mental status examination.
  • Order, conduct, and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Diagnose appropriate syndromes based on DSM-IV , DSM-V, and ICD-10 criteria.
  • Plan treatment in collaboration with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Document all relevant data according to clinical and regulatory standards.
  • Provide indicated treatments based on scientific principles, using, but not limited to, the following interventions:
    • Prescribing pharmacologic agents.
    • Evidenced based psychotherapies  (e.g. Cognitive  Behavioral Therapy,  Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy) 
    • Patient education including facilitation of self-care.
    • Referral to other health professionals and resources.

Diagnosis 

  • Formulates the appropriate psychiatric/medical differential diagnoses based on the history, physical examination and clinical findings 
  • Identifies psychiatric and medical needs of the individual, and associated needs of the patient's family, as a result of the evaluation of the collected data 

Development of a Treatment Plan 

  • Establishes priorities and a mutually acceptable plan of care to maximize the health potential of the individual patient. This includes delegated medical functions as designated in clinical privileges.

Education and Professional Development 

  • Participates in the education of health care professionals and students through mentoring, precepting, feedback in team and clinical care settings, providing inservices, seminars and formal presentations.
  • Participates in own performance evaluation and establishment of plan for self-development and learning.

Professional Standards

  • Abides by the standards of care and standards of practice established by Michigan Medicine.
  • Practices within the regulations of the Michigan Mental Health and Public Health Codes.
  • Incorporates guidelines and standards into practice as established by state and national regulatory bodies and professional organizations.
  • Nurse Practitioners only:
    • Abides by standards of care and standards of practice established by the Department of Nursing, Michigan Medicine
  • Physician Assistants only:
    • Accepts and abides by the Guidelines for Ethical Conduct for the Physician Assistant Profession as established by the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Required Qualifications*

NP Requirements

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing or Family Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing. 
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) or American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).   
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum two years’ clincal experience (at any level) in a psychiatric/mental health setting.

PA Requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant  (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Psychiatry
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum two years’ clinical experience (at any level) in a psychiatric/mental health setting.

Desired Qualifications*

  • One (1) year clinical supervisory or leadership experience or demonstrated leadership ability or leading of a change/project or ability to plan, organize and direct the activities of others.
  • One (1) or more years’ experience as a Psychiatric-Mental Health NP/PA.
  • Training in evidence based psychotherapy (e.g. cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy).
  • Familiarity with psychotropic medication therapy
  • Knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as measured by references and interviews.
  • Demonstrated success working within a multidisciplinary team model.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours per week 
Shift: Days with possible evenings based on clinical operations
Location: Rachel Upjohn Building

Background Screening
