Job Summary

The University of Michigan Medical School is seeking interested analysts to join the Medical School Data and Analytics team. This position will focus on data analytics, and the individual accepting this role will be a key player in expanding these capabilities across the education mission of the Medical School in order to assist leadership with data-driven strategic decisions. The primary customers for this role include Medical School leadership, the educational units of Medical School Administration and the Medical School academic departments.

Working with Medical School Administration’s Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) candidates for this position will be expected to thoroughly understand the data environment, conduct current and new data analysis, create a series of standard reports based on analytics, and serve as innovators in developing new ways to analyze and present data to leadership. Candidates should be able to function independently, deliver projects in a timely and effective manner, and enjoy creating new and novel solutions.

What You'll Do

As a Business Analyst, a typical day will likely include:

  • A combination of time spent working individually with data extraction and analysis, as well as time spent working collaboratively with the Office of Medical Student Education teams on deliverables and serving customers
  • Engaging with the University’s information technology department and national data providers/repositories (AAMC, NRMP, AMCAS, etc…) on data, definitions, and ET (extract, transform, and load) processes
  • Working in Tableau, M-pathways (PeopleSoft), and OMSE applications creating new reports and deliverables that meet active business needs, as well as exploring new ways to visualize data (that customers and leadership potentially do not know is feasible/needed)
  • Interacting with customers to discover and identify business needs, understanding and communicating how data analytics can assist those needs, and presenting alternative solutions to improve operations and better support strategic goals and decision-making
  • Developing OMSE-specific data dictionary, documenting data elements and including rationale and use guidelines.  Distributing, updating, and ensuring OMSE partners utilize data dictionary to support reporting consistency across units and departments.
  • Creating and implementing the needs and solutions outlined in the prior bullet point
  • Providing standard reporting to support CQI and documentation for LCME accreditation standards
  • Researching trends in the industry as well as best practices from other academic medical centers in order to advance the education mission position as a leader amongst medical schools and academic medical centers

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Science, Business Administration, or equivalent
  • Experience with query writing software, querying relational databases, applying business process/data modeling, database design, and other analytical tools/techniques surrounding business and financial analysis
  • Experience in data manipulation and extraction techniques, data modeling, and data presentation and visualization
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel) and PeopleSoft
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written), and the ability to analyze large amounts of complex information to present simple and concise material to the appropriate audience

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Information Science, Business Administration, or equivalent
  • Interest in higher education and/or the healthcare industry
  • Advanced analytical, modeling, and data visualization skills
  • Experience in designing dashboards
  • Demonstrated proficiency in SQL, querying tools, and translating business needs into technical solutions
  • Experience in Business Objects, PeopleSoft, Oracle, and/or Hyperion
  • Knowledgeable using statistical software packages such as SPSS or SAS
