Course Description

Increasingly, millions of human-initiated and natural activities are altering our planet. Over the past century, through our ever-increasing population and mastery of technology, we have been changing our planet’s environment at a pace unknown in Earth’s natural history. In 'Climate Change and Sustainability: Environmental Challenges of the 21st Century' students will study the impacts of modern human society on land, ice, fresh water, ocean, atmosphere, ecosystems, resources, and human well-being. We will also consider practical, local, and every-day considerations relevant to a sustainable human future. In the lab portion of the course, small-group discussions and analysis of spatial data, utilizing ArcGIS software, are used to investigate the role and impacts of change, toward developing mitigation and Instructor adaptation strategies.

Required Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of MS Office and Canvas
  • Knowledge of human impacts on Earth’s natural systems.
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Applicant must be in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. If the language of instruction at a students undergraduate institution was not English, they must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Prior experience in either Environ 110 or 111 or equivalent is desirable.
  • Demonstrated expertise and interest in subject area. For Environ 111, individuals should have a strong grounding in natural systems, as well as an understanding of human impacts on natural systems. A candidate's depth and enthusiasm will be assessed based on their course work, research experience, and nontraditional experiences in the subject area.
  • Advanced technology skills.  Many Environ 111 activities are web-based, and GSIs will be most effective if they have a good level of computing competence.
  • Strong knowledge of ArcGIS.

Decision Making Process

Faculty review applications for positions in their courses and indicate their ranked preferences. They are also asked to indicate whether they regard any applicants as unqualified and why.

Selection Process

A committee comprised of the Associate Director and the Department Administrator reviews the faculty recommendations to determine and move forward with selection preferences where possible. The Associate Director determines appointments where no clear preference match is possible.
