Course Description

Ethics is a matter of respecting in thought and action those things that we value. How do we value the natural world and how do we shape our behavior in response to those values? How are we to understand the place of humans within nature?

In our real world of environmental questions and issues, various environmental philosophies such as the conservation movement, deep ecology, ecofeminism, and others weigh in on such diverse things as: 

  • What attitudes and values drove the logging era in Michigan and how should we value forests today?
  • Are humans apart from nature?  Or are humans a part of nature?
  • What “good” are the Great Lakes?  What should the goals of human management and interaction be?
  • Does the label ‘organic’ mean anything, or should we be beyond organic? What effects on the natural world come from our agricultural practices?
  • What makes a species ‘invasive’?  Should humans transfer genes across species boundaries?
  • Why should we care about wilderness? Is ‘the wild’ a place, a construct, or a quality of existence?


  • Meet weekly with the instructor 
  • Attend classes 
  • Lead discussion groups (3/wk. on the 5 weeks corresponding to writing assignments)
  • Deliver one or two course lectures
  • Assist in grading of papers and exams 
  • Hold office hours.

  • Experience with MSWord, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Applicant must be in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. If the language of instruction at undergraduate institution was not English, student must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A
  • Must have taken or take concurrently SWC 933.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Excellent writing and feedback skills. 
  • Previous coursework in environmental ethics is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with environmental issues dealt with in class. 
  • Good organization and work habits.

Decision Making Process

Faculty review applications for positions in their courses and indicate their ranked preferences. They are also asked to indicate whether they regard any applicants as unqualified and why.

Selection Process

A committee comprised of the Associate Director and the Department Administrator reviews the faculty recommendations to determine and move forward with selection preferences where possible. The Associate Director determines appointments where no clear preference match is possible.
