Verify your own course schedule against the schedule for the course to which you are applying as a GSI. All GSIs are required to attend the lecture and discussion times as posted.
This class introduces students to environmental law and the impact of the legal process on decisions that affect the environment. Topics include common law tort actions, toxic tort actions, statutory controls of pollution (primarily the federal pollution statutes), climate change regulation, natural resource regulation (e.g., wetlands, endangered species, land use) and finally, regulatory takings. The class also covers basic administrative agency structure and performance, and constitutional protections.
- Lead 3 discussion sections as the primary (only) instructor in the discussion
- Review and grade reading questions
- Attend lectures and answer questions re: lecture in discussion and otherwise
- Review and help finalize three exams
- Take primary responsibility for giving exams and grading all three exams
- Compile final grades for review with Professor Hall
- Hold office hours and answer questions of students
- Provide advice on law school, graduate school and careers if requested
- Competence with MS Word and Excel required
- Applicant must be in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. If the language of instruction at a student’s undergraduate institution was not English, they must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.
- Previous teaching experience is desired.
It would be difficult to teach this class without having attended law school for at least a year. It also helps to have taken this class or other environmental law related courses.

Decision Making Process
Faculty review applications for positions in their courses and indicate their ranked preferences. They are also asked to indicate whether they regard any applicants as unqualified and why.
A committee comprised of the Associate Director and the Department Administrator review faculty recommendations to determine and move forward with selection preferences where possible. The Associate Director determines appointments where no clear match is possible.
