Verify your own course schedule against the schedule for the course to which you are applying as a GSI. All GSIs are required to attend the lecture and discussion times as posted.
Lectures and discussions explore principles underlying the nature and management of natural resources, with examples from the Great Lakes region. Ecological principles are explored in the context of human behavioral, ethical, socio-economic and institutional factors, emphasizing the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches. Topics covering food, water, energy and shelter include issues such as biodiversity, endangered species, population dynamics, exploitation practices, tropical deforestation, air and water pollution and waste disposal. Skills developed include quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, and methods for interdisciplinary problem solving.
Responsibilities include coordination of lesson plans and assignments with other GSIs and primary instructor, lead discussions on current events and readings, coordination of student projects, holding regular office hours, and other relevant tasks as needed.

- Grade all student work, including participation, projects, assignments, and exams
- Hold review sessions for exams
- Applicants should have a strong grounding in natural and social systems, including arts and culture, a sophisticated understanding of human impacts on natural systems, and integrating natural sciences, social sciences and arts/culture towards creating change.
- Experience with environmental issues in the Laurentian Great Lakes basin
- Applicant must be in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. If the language of instruction at the undergraduate institution was not English, a student must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.
- Demonstrated expertise and interest in the subject area. For Environ 201, a candidate's depth and enthusiasm will be assessed based on their course work, research experience, and nontraditional experiences (e.g., Peace Corps, study or work abroad) in subject areas.
- Although previous teaching experience is NOT required, experience in successfully instructing and mentoring students in traditional or non-traditional settings is desirable.

Decision Making Process
Qualified GSIs will be selected to represent a range of disciplinary areas, experiences, and backgrounds.
Faculty review applications for positions in their courses and indicate their ranked preferences. They are also asked to indicate whether they regard any applicants as unqualified and why.
A committee comprised of the Director and the Department Administrator reviews faculty recommendations to determine and move forward with selection preferences where possible. The Director determines appointments where no clear selection is possible.
