Job Summary

The University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation is seeking a motivated statistician who would collaborate under the direction of the IHPI administrative manager and lead statistician to join the health services research team in pulmonology and disabilities research. The analyst would work on grant funded projects with two principle aims: (1) Optimizing the modes and costs of care for pneumonia patients after hospitalization and (2) Understanding and examining longitudinal costs and outcomes for disabled patients among those with commercial and public insurance.
Candidates for this position must be driven, with an intellectual curiosity and desire to continue learning, as well as the ability to work on multiple projects at one time.

This research team sits at the North Campus Research Complex and aims to improve the efficiency of healthcare in the United States by optimizing clinical practice and informing health policy.

The analyst will also have an appointment at the IHPI Data & Methods Hub (DMH) that reports to the administrative manager and lead statistician, which is a large institutional resource that provides data management and statistical expertise on a variety of projects within Michigan Medicine. As a member of the DMH team, the analyst will have access to mentors who can help support career growth and provide guidance when encountering analytic challenges.

Strong statistical knowledge and the ability to use SAS are extremely important for this role.

This position involves a wide range of tasks related to data management and analysis of quantitative data obtained from large national data providers such as Premier, OptumInsight, and others. Specifically, the position involves providing independent and collaborative statistical support including:

  • Providing guidance for study design issues
  • Cleaning, managing, merging, and analyzing data from large clinical datasets.
  • Supporting faculty and staff in the development of quantitative analysis plans.
  • Independently conducting appropriate data analyses.
  • Writing, testing, and implementing programs using SAS/STATA/R to clean, manage, merge, and analyze large, complex datasets. SAS is preferred for working with very large data (>1 Terabyte).
  • Preparing and maintaining technical documentation of data and analysis files.
  • Summarizing, interpreting, and presenting results in written, tabular and visual formats for reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Assisting in the writing and editing of reports, abstracts, manuscripts, conference presentations, and grant proposals.
  • Participating as a team member in discussions on analysis and improvement of data collection, quality of data analyses, programming and documentation.
  • Providing general analytic support to project faculty and staff.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, biostatistics, computer science, information, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience.
  • One or more years of experience in data management and statistical analysis.
  • One or more years of experience using SAS or Stata for statistical analyses.
  • Ability to calculate both descriptive and inferential statistics in accordance with project designs.
  • Proven ability to write clear and concise analytical documentation, summaries of various methodologies, and descriptions of statistical results, as well as create charts, tables, and other visual aids.
  • Working knowledge of epidemiologic concepts and methodology.
  • Experience with complex data structures and linkages between data sources.
  • Ability to be consistently detail-oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently work on multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple researchers.
  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in statistics, biostatistics, public health, or a related field.
  • Experience using STATA
  • Conversant or some knowledge of any of the following methodologies: Logistic and OLS regression, propensity score matching or weighting, interrupted time series, difference-in-difference analysis, survival models, instrumental variables and/or cluster analysis.
  • Exposure to mixed methods analyses is helpful
  • Teaching orientation and interest or experience in communicating and sharing programming and statistical approaches with colleagues and other internal partners
  • Experience managing and analyzing large national insurance claims data such as Medicare/Medicaid, OptumInsight, Truven MarketScan
  • Experience with hierarchical modeling and two-stage least squares
  • Experience with SQL

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
