Course Description

The LSA Honors Program invites applications to teach Honors Core 240: Wellness, beginning July 1, 2020. Position is pending enrollment demand.


Effort for each section is 1.0%, as this course meets the First Year Writing Requirement.

This course is an introduction to social-scientific research through the concept of “wellness.” We will explore the meaning and many dimensions of wellness, past and present. For example, wellness today is understood to include emotional, spiritual, social, and even financial elements, in addition to physical health. We will also carefully study claims made about wellness, from popular culture (think social media, television, “fitspiration” blogs) to varieties of clinical practice (think dietitians or therapists) and to the sciences (think medicine, public health, psychology, sociology). Our focus will range from the individual to the social and systemic. For example, we will consider what motivates — or fails to motivate — individuals to improve their wellness. Should schools really decide your PE grade on the basis of your Fitbit data? But we will also explore the social, political, and cultural factors that foster — or impede — wellness in populations, groups, or even countries. For example, are people in the cold and dark Finland really the happiest people in the world, as some recent data claim, or is the increase in wealth historically the reason people become healthier around the world?

This fast-paced, seven-week course will satisfy the First-Year Writing Requirement. Short readings will range from popular media to scientific articles. Writing assignments will involve writing about the same information in different styles, revising previous work, and experimenting with some “new media” such as podcasts or videos. Individual students get to pursue projects close to their own interests, but the course will also involve significant collaborative work, particularly in the classroom.

Each GSI will lead a discussion section of the larger course. Each GSI is also expected to participate in the instruction during lecture as students work with hands-on in-class activities. Regular meetings of the entire teaching team for the course will provide general guidance, lesson planning, and assignment norming.

Required Qualifications*

Good standing in a graduate or professional program in a relevant department.

Desired Qualifications*

Candidacy in a Ph.D. program in a relevant department; experience teaching introductory courses at UM or other college or university.
