The Michigan Emergency Department Improvement Collaborative (MEDIC,

http://www.medicqi.org/) is a statewide quality improvement effort funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan/Blue Care Network with the Coordinating Center housed at the University of Michigan’s North Campus Research Complex (NCRC) within the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI). MEDIC’s vision is to support emergency physicians working together to improve patient care. MEDIC is part of a family of projects called Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQIs) within the Value Partnerships program (www.valuepartnerships.com/), making health care work better across the state of Michigan. MEDIC focuses on care decisions made in the emergency department for children and adults. Working collaboratively with a network of partner hospitals, we leverage the shared knowledge and experience of site participants combined with timely feedback on performance on quality measures to improve the care of our patients through dissemination and implementation of best practices. There are currently 23 hospitals in the collaborative with plans to continue expansion annually supported by an infrastructure of a clinical data registry with more than 4 million ED encounters hosted by a third party vendor

Responsibilities*

We are looking for a Senior Statistician to perform a wide range of statistical, data management, programming, and analytic duties. Specifically, the position involves:

* Performing statistical analysis for quality improvement projects aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of emergency medicine care

* Compiling descriptive statistics and summary data necessary for BCBSM and MEDIC collaborative-wide meeting reporting

* Utilizing statistical process control (SPC) and other quality improvement analytic approaches for long-term monitoring of site-specific and collaborative-wide performance

* Assisting in the implementation and improvement of the MEDIC Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) Pay-for-Performance (P4P) and Value Based Reimbursement (VBR) metrics

* Writing SAS macro code to generate automated reports

* Writing and editing code to clean, manage, merge, and analyze data

* Developing and executing analytic plans and protocols for the purpose of disseminating MEDIC research through abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts

* Contributing as co-author to publications in abstracts and manuscripts in preparation for publication in peer-review journals

* Collaborating with the chair of the Data and Publications Committee to review requests for use of MEDIC data, research proposals and extramural grant proposals involving MEDIC data or collection of data through the MEDIC collaborative, and abstracts and manuscripts

In this position, you will work with a highly cooperative group of clinicians, data experts, health services researchers and quality improvement professionals. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain experience and expertise in healthcare quality improvement, value based care, and research design. The Senior Statistician position also allows for the ability to improve leadership and mentorship skills.

 

Required Qualifications*

* Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of work experience in a statistical field

* Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as cooperatively

* Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at the same time

* Demonstrated proficiency working with large datasets using statistical software programs (SAS experience required)

* Experience utilizing statistical models and significance testing, including linear and logistic regression, and hierarchical models

Desired Qualifications*

* Master’s degree in biostatistics, statistics, or equivalent

* 5+ years of work experience in a statistical field

* Previous experience working with large administrative claims datasets

* Experience with additional statistical software programs such as STATA, SPSS, or R

Background Screening
