Job Summary

Phlebotomists are members of the medical laboratory team, responsible for specimen collection from patients seen at Michigan Medicine, and may be based in either inpatient or ambulatory locations.   They are responsible for following CLSI guidelines and must adhere to regulatory requirements determined by agencies including, but not limited to, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission.

Responsibilities*

Customer Service

  • Assist in customer related issues by actively listening to the customer’s needs, offering assistance and ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledgeable in patient and family centered care practices
  • Respond quickly and act professionally and appropriately in stressful situations.
  • Alert supervision to complaints or problems and see them through.
  • Maintain customer rights in accordance with institutional policies by demonstrating

respect for the individuality and wishes of others, honoring cultural and religious differences, maintaining confidentiality of information and demonstrating ethical behaviors based on honesty, fairness and equity.

  • Flex to any onsite locations when patient and/or staffing volumes require.

 

Specimen collection

  • Follow written procedures without deviation, especially patient identification and specimen labeling.
  • Perform phlebotomy using proper technique and age specific guidelines.
  • Obtain blood specimens using alternative methods such micro capillary collection, indwelling catheters and (outpatient only) implanted ports when trained and situationally appropriate.
  • (Outpatient) When applicable, perform Point of Care testing according to written procedures, without deviation

Specimen Handling

  • Handle specimen according to test specifications (i.e. place on ice, sand thermos, or protect from light)
  • Use appropriate resources to locate correct specimen requirement and collection instructions (i.e. online Pathology Handbook, Associate Supervisor)
  • Collect specimen in proper tube type, and fill tubes whenever possible
  • Label specimen according to Patient Identification Policy

Specimen Transport

  • Ensure delivery of all clinical specimens to Specimen Processing, following appropriate guidelines based on handling instructions and method of transport
  • (Outpatient) Utilize PathTrack for documentation of specimen transport and have basic working knowledge of system functions

Computer Data Entry

  • Where applicable, utilize SoftLab and/or SoftID LIS to complete lab ordering process and cancellations, as appropriate.
  • Exhibit basic understanding of problem solving in MiChart and Soft applications.
  • (Outpatient) When applicable, process lab orders from MiChart HIS, utilizing all appropriate resources to ensure that proper lab work is being completed.
  • (Outpatient and Nursing Home) Follow written procedures without deviation for MLabs and MLabs Connect patients
  • (Outpatient) Enter and verify results for point of care testing according to written procedures, without deviation

 

Safety

  • Comply with safety instructions and observe safe work practices
  • Adhere to Hand Hygiene policy.
  • Stay familiar and know where to locate fire and disaster plan
  • Respond to Code pager per procedure
  • Complete all MLeanring Mandatories on time
  • Complete all MediaLab training tasks on time

 

Communication and Teamwork

  • Use effective communication including written, verbal and information technology skills
  • Communicate problems encountered to Associate Supervisor or Supervisor promptly
  • Provide feedback peer-to-peer, to Associate Supervisor, and to Supervisor
  • Work effectively with others to accomplish goals
  • Participate in daily stocking and cleaning of unit and workstations/carts
  • Use Outlook daily to read current memos and communication.

Professional Development

  • Use skills and resources to improve performance in Outpatient Phlebotomy.
  • Seek knowledge from Phlebotomist Specialists and Associate Supervisors
  • Read Outlook emails and indicate interest in attending any classes, talks, or in-services

Supervision Received:

Supervision is received by Associate Supervisor, Supervisor or Administrative Manager. Provisional supervision may be received by Training Specialists.

Supervision Exercised:

No supervision exercised

Required Qualifications*

  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated customer service skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • Considerable experience in phlebotomy
  • Phlebotomy Certification or equivalent coursework
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment
  • Proficient in basic computer functions

This will be a term-limited position. 

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
