Job Summary

An application programmer position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Dawen Cai in the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. This individual will be responsible for developing “big data” analysis programs and workflows used for high-throughput microscopy image processing in close collaboration with the scientific team in the Cai Lab.

The Cai lab develops novel technologies for genetic manipulation, neural circuit mapping, lineage tracing, imaging and single cell profiling. Using Drosophila and mouse models, the long-term goals of the Cai lab include 1) defining neuronal and circuitry components of brain functions at the single cell resolution, and 2) illuminating the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing neuronal differentiation and circuit formation in the central nervous system.

Responsibilities*

Responsiblities include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing and implementing database layouts for optimal image storage.
  • Designing and implementing data organization/compression strategies (Python, C++, SQLite3) for images taken by our lab’s microscope systems.
  • Deploying and managing these processes within several high-performance/supercomputing environments.
  • Optimization on the above to ensure computational resources are efficiently utilized.
  • Occasionally managing junior staff members assisting with data entry tasks.

Required Qualifications*

Qualified candidates should have a B.S. and/or M.S. in computer science, data science, or a related field. Experience in one or multiple of Python, Unix, R, C++/C, MATLAB, database programming languages (MySQL, MongoDB, SQLite3), and/or network engineering are preferred, however, training opportunities may be provided for an individual with other applicable programming experience. We are seeking a highly independent and motivated individual with excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both verbal and written).

Background Screening
