Job Summary

Diagnostic Radiology & Recovery Nursing provides nursing support for the Diagnostic Imaging divisions in Radiology (CT, Ultrasound, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Breast Imaging, Cross Sectional procedures), pre- and post-procedure care for Interventional Radiology procedure patients and provides Radiology support at multiple Michigan Medicine ambulatory care sites.  Patient populations range in age from pediatric to geriatric, and include inpatient, outpatient and ambulatory care sites.  Nursing staff in this unit provide focused, episodic care, from pre-op prep, to intra-procedural monitoring and administration of sedation/analgesia, to post-op recovery and patient/family education related to radiological exams and/or interventional procedures, as well as responding to emergency care calls in all areas of Radiology.
The Clinical Nursing Director in the Diagnostic Radiology & Recovery nursing unit is a key partner with Medical Division Directors, Radiology modality managers and the Director of Clinical Operations in providing patient- and family-centered care in a safe, efficient and timely manner, and actively collaborates with Radiology leadership in the development of annual budgets and activity forecasts; manages and provides variance reporting of activity, payroll, commodity and capital budgets, and participates in new program development and implementation.  This role assures implementation of patient care and quality assurance standards; plans, organizes, and evaluates clinical practice and educational activities.  The Clinical Nursing Director provides professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice for nurses, including Clinical Nurse Supervisor, RNs, and LPNs.  This includes staff development programs and unit orientation to ensure compliance with practice standards, identifying and resolving unit operational problems and representing the unit on clinical area and hospital committees, maintaining compliance with Federal and State regulations regarding affirmative action, safety and patient care.  This individual participates as a member of the Radiology leadership team to provide and continually improve health care services and to support the mission and goals of the Health System.  
The Clinical Nursing Director is responsible for the clinical practice of nursing personnel, nurse staffing, scheduling and administration of nursing, and provides supervision to clinical personnel.  This role serves as the point of administrative and clinical leadership in a designated patient care unit for 24 hours, seven days a week.  The Clinical Nursing Director provides coordination between management and patient care activities that is consistent with institutional goals and objectives and provides essential coordination between patient care units within the organizational structure of Nursing Services.

• Develop and implement unit goals and objectives which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.

• Integrate unit goals and objectives with Nursing goals and objectives.  Advise and assist with the establishment of priorities and institutional program development.  

• Work closely with medical staff and other disciplines for the successful implantation of patient, unit, departmental and institutional objectives.  Assist in the resolution of interdisciplinary operating problems.

• Supervise operations of the unit.  Establish minimum/maximum staffing patterns to insure quality patient care.  Initiate and implement a staffing schedule which is consistent with care requirements and respond to varying patient activity and patient mix.  Identify and recommend specific staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with unit and department objectives and patient mix.

• Recruit, interview, and select qualified personnel.  Manage, supervise and coordinate nursing staff for Diagnostic Radiology & Recovery nursing.  Supervise unit operations.  Plan, assign and review the work of nurses and support staff.

• Initiate and implement staffing consistent with the needs of patient activity in collaboration with other members of Radiology leadership teams. 

• Initiate and implement in-service guidelines for unit level orientation and staff development.  Encourage and provide opportunities for continuing education of unit staff.  Initiate, plan, analyze and participate in Nursing and ancillary staff development programs and workshops.

• Evaluate and provide ongoing feedback about performance of nursing staff responsible for patient care.  Make recommendations for merit awards and personnel classification changes.  Counsel and discipline nursing staff to enable achievement of unit, Radiology and institutional objectives, particularly related to high quality patient care.

• Interpret and implement University, hospital and Radiology policies and programs and ensure their uniform and correct application.  

• Work collaboratively with medical director, operations director and administrative managers to identify and resolve unit operational problems and process improvements.

• Develop and implement unit goals and objectives, which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national, professional and regulatory guidelines.

• Participate and coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of multi-disciplinary patient care activities and programs.

• Represent Diagnostic nursing services in Radiology planning and problem-solving regarding patient care.

• Project and monitor personnel budget for Diagnostic Radiology & Recovery nursing unit.   Provide information regarding budget variances to Operations Director.

• Participate in concurrent and retrospective evaluation of patient care consistent with the hospital quality improvement programs.  Through this review process, evaluate and recommend changes and improvements in areas affecting the quality and safety of patient care.

• Collaborate with Clinical Nurse Supervisor in all aspects of unit operations.  Collaborate with Educational Nurse Coordinator to initiate and implement guidelines for unit level orientation and staff development.  Encourage and provide opportunities for continuing education of the nursing staff.

• Plan, coordinate and evaluate LEAN initiatives and other quality improvement activities.

• Assure compliance with regulatory, legal, patient care and safety programs.  

• Facilitate the education of health sciences students.   Establish guidelines with nursing faculty which support the institutional goal of providing the primary clinical environment for nursing students.  Facilitate, coordinate and monitor the clinical experience of nursing and other students.  

• Initiate and cooperate in applied research in health care in keeping with the institutional objectives of maintaining prominence in developing new modes of clinical practice.

• Formulate professional goals and prepare written evaluation for appropriate staff.

• Provide coordination between management and patient care activities that are consistent with the institutional objectives for achieving high standards of patient care, as well as other institutional goals and objectives.

• Provide essential coordination between patient care units, hospital departments and ambulatory care units for safe patient care and efficient throughput that is consistent with unit institutional goals and objectives.

This position reports directly to the Radiology Director of Clinical Operations.  Functional reporting is also provided by the Associate Chief Nursing Officer for UH/CVC, who reports to the Chief Nursing Officer, UH/CVC.

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.  
  • Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered). If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
  • Two (2) years recent leadership experience, to include demonstrated leadership, management, communication, counseling, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution and group process skills. 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Two (2) years recent supervisory experience in a healthcare setting; preferably in a procedural care setting
  • Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence
  • Recent experience in Nursing Management in a tertiary care setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, interpret and analyze nursing practice in a procedure-focused area independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills including personnel management and the ability to perform as a role model for Nursing Staff. 
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a manner that fosters teambuilding and provides visionary direction for team members.
  • Experience with change management process.
  • Evidence of successful implementation of initiatives positively impacting and improving patient care outcomes.

  • Experience with interest based problem solving and negotiations. 
  • Expertise and familiarity with High Reliability Organization Skills training.
  • Certified Nurse Manager and Leader Certification (CNML).
