As a member of this team, you will play a vital role in treating child and adolescents with psychiatric conditions in a state of the art in-patient unit. The hospitalizations are short-term and there is high acuity. The care is provided by a multi-disciplinary team in an academic environment and social work plays a pivotal role. The job involves conducting psycho-social assessments for every patient, working intensively with families around communication and behavior problems, providing support and psychoeducation, arriving at and implementing discharge plans, and being an integral member of the team to address psycho-social difficulties and address cultural dimensions of cases.

You will be responsible for:
- Evaluating patient/family system and meeting with significant people in patient’s life. Making appropriate referrals to CPS if needed. Arranging for supports in community for after-care (day programs, individual and family therapists) and assisting family with planning. All interventions are documented.
- Participating in daily multi-disciplinary team meetings. Articulating to the team the progress of family work and discharge planning.
- Working directly with patients regarding discharge planning and family concerns.
- Brief therapeutic interventions drawing on evidence-based psychotherapies, psychoeducation, safety planning, assisting family members in understanding and supporting the patient, grief counseling, and safety planning.
- A Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
- A current license to practice social work in the State of Michigan.
- Previous experience with mental health social work, working with children/adolescents, in a hospital setting, day hospital environment, or CMH. Knowledge about psychiatric diagnoses and the ability to provide effective psycho-education to families.
- Skilled in developing rapport and effectively communicating with a diverse patient population.
- Efficient, accurate assessment of patient needs and effective case dispositions.
- Effective organizational skills, flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks in a dynamic medical clinic.
- Independent, sound decision-making is necessary for success in this position.
- Effective collaboration with a large multi-disciplinary team.
- Proficiency in keeping accurate and timely clinical records by computer.
- Experience with evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions (e.g., CBT, MI, Family Systems, Parent Behavioral Training, psychoeducation) relevant to working with youth with psychiatric illnesses and suicidal crises.
- Knowledge of community resources and effectiveness with making referrals for after-care.
This is full time, 40 hour/week position. The schedule will be Tuesday - Saturday 8:30am - 5:00pm
This position will work out the Nyman Family Unit for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, located on the 8th floor of CS Mott Children’s Hospital.
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Advancement through the career ladder at the Expert or Clinical Scholar Level is required for placement in the MSW Senior Classification
