Job Summary

The Department of Psychiatry within the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, and organized leader to guide and inform improvements to the culture, climate, and performance of TRAILS (Transforming Research into Action to Improve the Lives of Students).

The mission of TRAILS ( is to provide access to evidence-based mental health services for all students in schools. TRAILS partners with a wide variety of community stakeholders throughout Michigan to build capacity within K-12 schools so that their students affected by mental illnesses and mental health challenges are best supported. TRAILS provides clinical resources, training, and implementation support to school and community mental health professionals with the aim of improving student health and social and educational outcomes, as well as, promoting health and healthcare equity. TRAILS has a particular focus with partnering with under-resourced communities with elevated Medicaid enrollment.  We partner with Intermediate School Districts (ISDs) across the state of Michigan, with our largest collaboration occurring with the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Specialist will work closely with senior program leadership to develop and execute a DE&I vision that spans the breadth of programmatic work and internal operations at TRAILS. Beyond identifying areas to improve, s/he will contribute to the development of strategic objectives and action items to align TRAILS with the University's comprehensive Five Year DE&I Strategic Plan ( This position will report to the TRAILS Manager.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing guidance on what metrics should be used to evaluate the culture and climate of TRAILS both internally as an organization and as a partner to communities across Michigan
  • Using identified metrics, lead a comprehensive assessment of the current status of TRAILS, with attention to cultural humility, diversity, and inclusion practices, utilizing tools such as focus groups, employee surveys, and data analysis
  • Regularly and actively solicit feedback and input from all TRAILS staff using strategies that promote transparency by protecting team member privacy
  • Provide guidance to TRAILS leadership to help improve recruitment and hiring practices, in alignment with TRAILS’ stated commitment to diversifying its staff, faculty, and trainee team significantly 
  • Provide recommendations to TRAILS regarding readings, lectures or courses, and other professional development opportunities to support personal reflection and growth related to implicit bias and anti-racist practices
  • Provide DE&I workshops and training to TRAILS staff and leadership 
  • Contribute to a team review of available research on the intersection of evidence-based mental healthcare and race to better inform programmatic recommendations TRAILS offers to partner communities
  • With input from a wide variety of stakeholders, prepare a comprehensive DE&I plan that includes long-term strategies for continuous operational improvement in areas including:
    • Hiring practices and processes
    • Communication (internal and external)
    • Material development
    • Community relations
    • Internal workplace culture
  • Work closely with the project leads to ensure the DE&I lens is applied across all TRAILS teams and projects

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences, education, community development, cultural studies, anthropology, or related field
  • Three (3) or more years of experience providing guidance, leadership, and facilitating learning initiatives on diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural humility initiatives within an organization
  • Three (3) or more years of experience implementing valid assessment tools for organizations to assess their culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Three (3) or more years of experience engaging and building relationships with community members and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated understanding of systems of oppression, equity, and inclusion
  • A proven track record of providing accurate and professional deliverables in a timely manner
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong project management, strategic planning, and peer-influencing skills 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in social sciences, education, community development, cultural studies, anthropology, or related field with five (5) years of experience
  • Experience working in school settings 
  • Experience in the human resources field
  • Experience with assessing materials, curricula, and messaging for cultural relevancy
  • Expertise with computer software (e.g., word processing, data management and storage, web-based survey platforms, etc.)
  • Experience working or interacting in a large urban city or community

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
