Applicants from within the Department of Economics should select the Winter 2021 (Internal Application).


Applicants who are not in the PhD program in economics should select the (external application). External students must submit a cover letter, CV, a transcript of all economics coursework, and a reference letter from a faculty member you have taught with previously.

If you have no previous teaching experience, a reference letter from your current faculty adviser can be submitted.

Duties in these positions include, but are not limited to attending required lectures, leading two discussion sections, participating in weekly staff meetings, holding office hours, grading assignments, and other duties as outlined on the fraction calculation form and by faculty request.

Required Qualifications*

To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and for Terms I and II, must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours. With written approval of the student's faculty advisor, five (5) credit hours may be acceptable. If the language of instruction at a students undergraduate institution was not English, they must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.

All first-time GSIs are required to complete the Departmental GSI Training Workshop.

Desired Qualifications*

A mastery in Economic Principles, an undergraduate degree in Economics, and teaching and/or leadership experience that will help in teaching any course. LSA student enrolled in a graduate program.

Decision Making Process

The Director of Graduate Students awards all GSI positions based on stated qualifications and criteria. The Department of Economics has a full funding commitment to its PhD students. Therefore, priority will be given to Economics PhD, Economics and Public Policy Joint Students, and Economics and Social Work students.

Selection Process

An applicant may request the status of his/her application from the Department of Economics at any time after the submission of their application.  The Department will make a reasonable effort  to extend offers to successful applicants by Monday, November 30, 2020 and requires signed offer letters and fraction forms be returned within 7 business days of the actual offer date.  Offers will typically be extended at least twenty-one (21) calendar days prior to the start of employment.
