Job Summary

We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented candidate to be a part of our great research team. The Research Associate in this role will work directly and closely with the Principal Investigator and Research Coordinator to help recruit and engage patient and clinician participants for two federally funded research studies. We are conducting a psychosocial intervention study to improve outcomes for patients with opioid addiction and chronic pain and a national survey study of physicians and other clinicians on treatment practices and variation in care for patients with substance use disorder.  The aim of these and other studies in the lab are to improve access to and quality of treatment for people with substance use disorders.

As a Research Associate, you will be responsible for making sure that accurate and timely data is collected for participants throughout these projects. This position is a great opportunity to learn more about the human subjects research process from start to finish, gain experience in patient and clinician contacts and expand knowledge on substance use and mental health treatment.

  • Conducting participant recruitment, screening, informed consent process and remuneration across patient and clinician participants with direction from Research Coordinator
  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Collaborate with the PI in preparing sections of working papers, reports, and manuscripts for submission
  • Develop meeting agendas and lead communication efforts with project stakeholders
  • Due to the current environment, all sessions will be conducted virtually via phone, email, etc. Regular sessions will be completed in person as soon as authorized
  • Additional responsibilities include data entry, maintaining project records, attending team meetings and trainings, and suicide/overdose risk assessments as needed

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor’s degree with related experience and interest in clinical research;
  • Excellent organizational skills, professionalism, and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Ability to confidently and thoughtfully interface with individuals of various backgrounds, including clinicians and patient populations
  • Strong attention to detail, including editing and proofreading proficiency;
  • Works well independently as well as in a team environment;
  • Due to the COVID-19 climate, we are currently working remotely.  The Research Associate will be held accountable for producing a functional and professional working environment capable of meeting Michigan Medicines work from home policies. 
  • Post-Covid19, recruitment and assessment of participants may take place in-person. For that reason, we require that candidates for this role have personal reliable transportation and are willing to drive across the state once it is safe to do so.

Desired Qualifications*

  • A background in research methods and/or clinical settings. 
  • Experience using MS Excel, Access, and REDCap is preferred.
  • Previous experience working with substance use, mental health or Veteran populations is preferred, but not required.
  • Strong ability to problem solve is highly desired.
  • Ability to maneuver throughout technology and remote communication
  • Comfort discussing sensitive topics with vulnerable populations;
  • Possess excellent written and oral communications skills;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and initiative.

Work Schedule

The Research Associate will be responsible for completing a schedule consisting of 40 hours a week held within 5 days. Our typical work day is either 9am to 5pm or 8am to 4pm based on manager’s approval. Some weekend or evening shifts might be needed based on participant’s availability.  Flexible hours are available for staff while we work remotely, however based on managers discretion and approval.

Work Locations

Due to the COVID-19 climate, we are currently working remotely until advised. The Research Associates will be expected to return to our base office located in Ann Arbor, MI as soon as authorized.  Our office is located at the Ann Arbor North Campus Research Center, building 16.

Under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
