There is a need for a Graduate Student Instructor in LHS 712: Natural Language Processing on Health Data for Winter 2021. The Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) will be a key member of the instructional team for LHS 712, working closely with the instructor.
Students in this course will learn advanced techniques to parse and collate information from text-rich health documents such as electronic health records, clinical notes, and peer-reviewed medical literature. In this elective, students will be able to delve deeper into challenges in recognizing medical entities in text documents, extracting clinical information, addressing ambiguity and polysemy, and building searchable interfaces to efficiently and effectively query and retrieve relevant patient data. Students will develop tools and techniques to analyze new genres of health information, and build resources to help in these tasks. Students will also participate in a semester-long project on addressing specific natural language processing challenges in real-life health data sets.
- Synchronous meeting: Mondays, 1:00pm – 2:00pm, will meet remotely on Zoom
- Class sessions run weekly from January 25th to April 20th, with a project presentation session on Monday, April 27th, 1:00 – 4:00pm.
- Co-teach 1-2 sessions as directed by the instructor.
- Attend all synchronous class sessions, and manage chat and Q&A sessions with the instructor.
- Hold office hours, one-on-one sessions, or small group discussions with students.
- Assist students with assignment-related technical issues with software packages, how to install them, etc.
- Grade reading summaries every week, and 3-4 assignments through the term with rubric set by the instructor.
- Assist with maintaining course website and media content. Help students with CANVAS, course set-up, access to course materials, and organization of materials, etc.
- Handle administrative and instructional technical issues
- Answer emails and questions related to GSI duties above

- Must be enrolled and in good standing in an academic program at the University of Michigan
- Proficient in Python and working with Jupyter notebooks. Additional proficiency in R and/or Java/C++ desired, but not required.
- Prior experience working with health data and/or text processing
- Prior university-level teaching experience
- Prior university student mentoring or student tutoring experience
