Job Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking a biostatistician to serve as a key member of their staff supporting the statistical needs of the Department’s faculty. The primary research interests of the faculty to whom the biostatistician will report include clinical epidemiological and health services research, specifically focused on work with electronic health record data and natural language processing.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide support for faculty in the areas of statistical analysis and data management 
  • Support faculty research projects
  • Advise on the use of statistical software and appropriate choice of statistical methodology 
  • Act as the primary statistical consultant/statistician on federally-funded grants
  • Aid faculty with the statistical aspects of grant proposals and manuscript preparation
  • Determining the appropriate statistical testing/modeling approach in accordance with the project's design
  • Utilizing innovative methods to solve analytic problems and provide guidance for project design issues
  • Independently conducting appropriate data analyses through computational implementation of statistical methods
  • Creating, manipulating, merging, and maintaining large, complex data sets
  • Implementing methods to ensure data quality including sensitivity and subgroup analyses
  • Summarizing, interpreting, and presenting results in written, tabular and visual formats; may include presentations to large groups as well as oral/poster presentations at national meetings
  • Working closely with database analyst on creating reports of data to support quality improvement activities of individual hospitals
  • Overseeing the work of others involved with data management with potential opportunity for management of data personnel

Required Qualifications*

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • 1-3 years of professional experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a recognized field of science or learning that is directly related to the duties of the position
  • Training in statistical consulting is expected
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively
  • Experience using advanced statistical software
  • Strong background/interest in research design and statistical computing
  • Experience performing analyses using large databases
  • A willingness to learn as well as gain/increase expertise in the use of qualitative analysis software
  • Ability to design and execute statistical models including but not limited to multivariable logistic, linear, and Cox regression

SENIOR LEVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in a recognized field of science or learning that is directly related to the duties of the position
  • 3 to 5 years of professional experience
  • Training in statistical consulting is expected
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively
  • Strong background/interest in research design and statistical computing
  • Experience performing analyses using large databases
  • A willingness to learn as well as gain/increase expertise in the use of qualitative analysis software
  • Ability to design and execute statistical models including but not limited to multivariable logistic, linear, and Cox regression

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree with at least 3 years of experience in statistics, biostatistics, or related field
  • Masters’ Degree in Statistics or Biostatistics or higher
  • Experience using the following software packages / languages: SAS, R, Python, NQuery Advisor 
  • Experience working with large datasets such as Medicare claims data
  • Experience working on operating systems such as Windows, Linux, Unix, and Macintosh 
  • Experience working with hierarchical and mixed effects models, and generalized estimating equation (GEE) models
  • Experience working with geographic information systems (GIS) mapping and ArcGIS software 
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms
  • Experience with natural language processing
  • Experience working with nationally-representative survey data
  • Experience with item-response theory/Rasch modeling
  • Able to work well as part of a research team, 
  • Ability to communicate statistical concepts and results both orally and through written manuscripts

Background Screening
