Mission Statement

Responsibilities*

  • With general supervision from the LSA Senior Director for Human Resources, maintain and enhance positive, professional, and effective relationships within LSA, and between LSA, university central offices, unionized academic personnel, and union leadership.
  • Partner with associate dean for DEI and professional development and others to ensure principles and practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion are fully incorporated into labor relations practices.
  • Provide consultation and guidance options to college senior leaders, chairs/directors, senior managers, chief administrators, and other academic and staff personnel involved in day-to-day administration of union contracts with the Lecturers’ Employee Organization (LEO) and Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO), including handling of grievances and informally resolving other situations.
  • In consultation with academic and administrative leaders, develop and continuously improve relevant college policies, procedures, and practices.  Lead or participate on related university or college work groups.
  • Develop, continuously improve, and evaluate training sessions, and resources so that administrators develop proficiency performing responsibilities related to the UM/LEO and UM/GEO agreements.
  • In collaboration with central Academic HR and as a representative of the college, prepare for and participate in university-wide contract negotiations, working with and apprising college leadership about critical topics.
  • Promote positive and proactive practices to reduce potential for conflicts, grievances, unfair labor practice charges, and other employment matters, including employer-related litigation.
  • Partner with central Academic HR and the Office of the General Counsel to prepare materials for arbitration hearings and other judicial and quasi-judicial proceedings, and represent the college in dealing with government agencies.
  • Administer the college faculty and staff policies on conflicts of interest and commitment. In consultation with academic and administrative leaders within and outside LSA, evaluate, and improve policies.  Engage in ongoing communication and training that builds awareness and accountability for policies.
  • Facilitate resolution of issues, if any that may arise during the pre-employment (primarily background check) process for faculty and graduate student appointees.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of labor relations and other, job-related activities.  Develop, analyze, and present relevant data so LSA can make informed organizational decisions.
  • Over time, this position has the potential to take on team leadership and/or administrative responsibility for two, full-time employees dedicated to providing expert guidance on complex, HR status change for academic personnel.

Required Qualifications*

  • Undergraduate degree, ideally in a directly relevant academic discipline, with at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of labor relations, including relevant laws, legal codes, procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, and agency rules.
  • Competence with valuing differences, supporting equal and fair treatment and opportunity, and fostering a climate of inclusion.
  • Strong service-focus on stakeholder expectations, acting with stakeholders in mind, generally providing high-quality service.
  • Ability to effectively adapt to change, decide and act when complete information may be unavailable, and comfortably handle risk or uncertainty.
  • Skilled in decision-making and problem solving.  Uses analysis, experience, and logical methods to make good decisions and solve problems with effective solutions; appropriately incorporates multiple inputs to establish shared ownership and action.
  • Strong results-orientation.  Performs work with energy and drive, values planning, and takes quick, decisive action when an opportunity presents itself.
  • Advanced negotiation skills in difficult situations and, to the extent reasonable, fashions creative solutions that are responsive to interests of parties involved.
  • Ability to manage conflict.  Successfully mediates conflict between individuals and groups, facilitating equitable agreements and settling disputes as possible.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Advanced competence in the areas of integrity of trust.
  • Advanced communication skills.  Actively listens to what others say.  Writes clearly and succinctly for audiences at various levels.  Effective in a variety presentation settings.
  • Quantitative and statistical skills.  Ability to develop, analyze and present data, including recommend various options or actions.
  • Intermediate proficiency with office productivity software such as Microsoft Office.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Graduate degree or a Juris Doctorate
  • Past experience leading teams, projects, or supervising employees
  • Experience administering labor agreements for academic personnel
