Job Summary

The Flow Cytometry Core provides instrumentation and expertise to University of Michigan investigators - and the surrounding biotech community - in a broad range of basic and medical science disciplines. Samples are prepared by individual investigators, who then deliver samples to the Core for flow cytometric analysis or cell sorting.  The Flow Core has 3 sites on UM's medical school campus. This role provides expertise and guidance in designing and conducting basic science research.

Responsible for operation of multiple (18) flow cytometers and associated equipment. This includes demonstrated flexibility with fluency across all core instruments and software platforms. 

Instrument management:
Independently diagnose and maintain instrumentation  Diagnosis and or repair of faulty equipment with coordination as needed with instrument manufacturers or repair service.  Provide after hours remote support and or phone support as needed. Maintain as developed a daily, weekly, monthly schedule of quality control and maintenance.

Customer liaison & Training:  
Liaison with researchers, departments, divisions from across campus needing access to Flow Cytometry
Lead User training including leading monthly lecture series on medical campus . 

Customer Assay Development: 
Assist researchers in formulating new methods and suggest options for improving quality and identifying potential problems.  Recommend and implement solutions, and collaborate in development.

Quality Control: 
Develop as necessary improvements to lab procedures, training, and maintenance.  

Sample Preparation Service:
Assist managing director with implementation of new service. 

Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. Co-authors publications and may co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences. 

Required Qualifications*

Bachelors degree in biological/physical sciences.  Minimum of 4 yrs experience in flow cytometry operations.  Must be proficient in the operation/maintenance of flow cytometry instrumentation and software.  Must be able to work independently and possess strong computer skills.  Must be able to communicate effectively with diverse Flow Core clientele and be willing to collaborate with scientists in the development of experimental protocols and data interpretation.  Must be willing to learn new technologies associated with flow cytometry and develop expertise to assist with associated assay development.

Desired Qualifications*

Proficiency in multiple cytometric platforms. 

Background Screening
