Mission Statement

Responsibilities*

The successful candidate is required to function as a research specialist in a nephrology research laboratory. The successful candidate is expected to work independently or with minimal supervision and to carry out the following duties:    

  • Conduct in vivo and in vitro experiments, collect and process samples, collect and analyze data, and develop new and/or specialized research methodologies. 
  • Manage a transgenic mouse colony including breeding new strains.
  • Oversee general lab and equipment maintenance, supplies, inventory, and organization. 
  • Assist in the supervision and training of junior scientists (temp employees, students, junior technicians, and/or postdoctoral fellows) in routine lab techniques and lab safety.
  • Disseminate information to laboratory staff through presentations and assist with abstract, manuscript, grant, and budget preparation. 
  • Keep neat, detailed records, experimental procedure logs, mouse colony logs and protocols.
  • Prepare and update regulatory protocols and revisions (i.e. animal/IRB/IBC protocols, IACUC, EHS, etc).

Required Qualifications*

Bachelors’s degree or higher in a biological science or related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience in a research laboratory.

  • Associate Level:       2-3 years in a research laboratory with relevant experience.
  • Intermediate Level:   >4 years of experience in a research laboratory with relevant experience.

Must have experience with basic molecular and cellular biology techniques and tools including: isolation of DNA, RNA, and protein from tissue and cultured samples, PCR, Western blot, immunostaining of tissue sections and cell preparations, cell culture.

Must be detail-oriented, highly responsible, and possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills.

Must be willing to learn new techniques and troubleshoot new protocols.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within the broader research group.

Ability to organize and analyze experimental data using software such as Microsoft Excel and Graphpad Prism and prepare publication quality figures.

Physical requirements:

Ability to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction; finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm; ability to see and hear within normal parameters, lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc. ability to move about workspace, ability to perform delicate microdissection and microsurgeries.

Mouse experience is mandatory. Must be able to handle rodents and comfortably perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts, and bedding materials.

Desired Qualifications*

Master’s or PhD in biological sciences with 4-5 years of demonstrated research experience through publications strongly preferred. 

The following skills are strongly desired for this position:

  • Microscopy, including immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, and image analysis in FIJI
  • Flow cytometry, FACS
  • Microdissection/microsurgical skills
