Job Summary

As part of the Office of the Provost, the Vice Provost for Engaged Learning supports the development of scholarship and engaged education at the University, cutting across Schools and Colleges, and facilitating the creation and coordination of shared infrastructure and policies to support this work. The portfolio spans a wide range of engagements by geography and disciplinary area, which may be centered on research, education, collaborative community projects and more.

The project manager will report to the Vice Provost and will be responsible for a variety of strategic activities and a variety of projects, primarily focused on engaged learning and community engagement, primarily with the city of Detroit and the State of Michigan. Projects, and their focus, are expected to evolve over time. This position will occasionally require work on evenings and weekends to accommodate workshops or other events.

The project manager will work on a variety of projects focused on educational activities and engaged scholarship, ranging from supporting and enabling engagements and exchanges in the community space, strengthening UM collaborations and strategy in the city of Detroit, managing the development of web presence, and developing means to present data on U-M activities to a variety of stakeholders. While each project will be different, common responsibilities include: 

  • Support the development of a vision and strategy for Engaged Learning at the University of Michigan, working with the Vice Provost and the units reporting and connected to Engaged Learning; including planning discussions and the development of internal and web, social media and promotional material for external audiences.
  • Data gathering, analysis and presentation: e.g. develop methods to collect, assimilate and present data on engaged learning activities. Identify existing data sources and develop new data sources, where appropriate, to provide complete pictures of engaged learning at Michigan. Support and contribute to the development of data infrastructures to boost the awareness, synergies and connections among the activities and the opportunities by U-M community members in specific areas, including the city of Detroit and the State of Michigan.
  • Support and gather input from advisory groups led by the Vice Provost of Engaged Learning by gathering and reporting information relevant to the group, support the preparation of reports and/or briefs.  
  • Support other activities by the Vice Provost’s Office, including the preparation of reports and briefs, and the development of Vice Provost’s office platforms for community engagement. Assist in designing and facilitating workshops and other events to build community among faculty and staff members involved in engaged learning and interdisciplinary programs. Support agenda development and planning for key advisory committees.

As time allows, the individual of this position will also contribute to advancing the overall the mission of the Provost’s Office by staffing committees and task force endeavors.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. 
  • Considerable experience (3+ years) in higher education or a similar setting is necessary. 
  • Sound understanding of the higher educational organization, culture, and values, including a strong sense of commitment, responsibility, and desire to serve the mission of the University.
  • Demonstrated project management skills at a high level in an academic or executive level setting. Ability to plan and execute complex projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated skills in writing for a variety of audiences and experience in communicating about and promoting programs or initiatives. 
  • Demonstrated skills in collecting, analyzing and presenting data through a variety of platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong sense of tact, discretion and diplomacy, including ability to support and facilitate discussions among groups representing different constituency within and outside the institution
  • Ability to organize and pursue complex work, with great attention to detail and in a timely and effective manner.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and willingness to work as needed to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Creative problem solving skills exercised with sound judgment and ability to anticipate emergent issues and needs, and to handle or advise appropriately.
