This position is a leadership and management role within the Ambulatory, Oncology, and Research Pharmacy Team. The Pharmacy Manager, Oncology Services will develop, design, implement, and monitor existing or new clinical pharmacy programs for oncology patients in ambulatory and inpatient settings; ensure and promote the safe, rational, efficacious and cost-effective use of drug therapy in patients under the care of our oncology services; provide leadership for the team and support development of guidelines and policies, quality improvement processes, and assist in the training of staff, residents and students. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position supervises, supports, and coordinates the personnel and activities of the oncology service line and team. May assist in dispensing medication as necessary.
- Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of oncology pharmacy services to support the Michigan Medicine’s goals and objectives
- Work collaboratively with physician and leadership teams to develop and implement quality improvement and process improvements to improve patient care and pharmacy services
- Represent oncology pharmacists at committee levels regarding medication use within organization.
- Ensures that all services are performed in accordance with hospital, departmental, and governmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Ensures all related quality assurance, billing, and other activities are performed and documented.
- Conduct practice-based research.
- Facilitate experiential education for students and residents.
- Management duties include interviewing, selecting and training of employees; setting and adjusting their rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary.
- Management responsibilities include the authority to hire, fire, or promote assigned employees or make recommendations that are given particular weight.
- This position has impact on budgeting, controlling costs, planning, scheduling, and procedural change.
- Work in a multidisciplinary oncology service as clinical pharmacist specialist.
- Actively collaborate with the health care teams designing, implementing and monitoring patient-specific pharmacotherapy and chemotherapy plans; interviewing patients to obtain medication histories; counseling patients regarding proper drug dosage, administration, usage, and possible side effects; documenting pharmaceutical care activities
- Provide assistance as a member of patient care team ensuring accurate medication use in specified patient care area
- Assure the appropriateness of medication therapy through:
- Review of medication orders for clinical appropriateness based on patient specific conditions and concomitant therapies.
- Communication with prescribers and providers regarding appropriateness of drug therapy and patient response to therapy.
- Pharmacists serve as preceptors for Doctor of Pharmacy students on a variety of practice experiences including Introductory Pharmacy Patient Experiences (IPPEs) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs), and may provide didactic education for pharmacy students
- Pharmacists serve as preceptors for pharmacy residents (PGY1 Pharmacy, PGY2 Hematology/Oncology, Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership).
- May assist in the development and provision of medication-related educational and training programs
- May conduct or participate in research, drug use projects, cost reduction/management initiatives, and quality improvement activities consistent with Michigan Medicine’s goals and objectives.
Additional pharmacy and patient care services may include but are not limited to:
- Patient education, including but not limited to chemotherapy education, malignancy related symptom management counseling, and anticoagulation education
- Precept PGY1 Pharmacy, PGY2 hematology/oncology residents
- Assure the appropriateness of medication therapy through: (rare responsibilities)
- Compound and accurately dispense medications, intravenous solutions and related supplies
- Formulate, prepare, and maintain quality control of pharmaceutical preparations
- Check medication preparation and oversee delegated pharmacy services performed by pharmacy technicians
- Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy with completion of internship, licensure as a Registered Pharmacist in the State of Michigan and 3 to 5 years of pharmacy experience including 1 to 2 years supervisory experience.
- Certificate of completion from a PGY-2 Residency in Hematology/Oncology, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in Hematology/Oncology.
- Current licensure as a registered pharmacist by the State of Michigan Board of Pharmacy and a Michigan Controlled Substance License to practice pharmacy in the State of Michigan, or eligibility to become licensed within 60 days of employment start date
- Demonstrate and apply excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Effectively communicate with pharmacy team members, other healthcare professionals, employees, patients and visitors
- Accurately and efficiently interpret and process medication orders, labels, and documentation
- Ability to meet all of the above qualifications and requirements with or without reasonable accommodation
- Relevant work experience in the area of practice
- Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification in Oncology (BCOP)
This schedule for this position includes dayshift responsibilities
This position will report to the Director of Ambulatory, Oncology, and Research Pharmacy Services
Managers provide direct supervision of pharmacists, technical staff, residents, and students working in their area including completion of job assignments and assuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures.
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
