Responsibilities*

Use a variety of diagnostic instruments to troubleshoot, test, repair, adjust, and calibrate scientific equipment. This equipment can employ various systems such as electronic, mechanical, or other systems. Apply mechanical and electronic design skills for analog and digital circuits. Create, design and interface custom electronic devices and controls. Must be proficient in electronics design and using Arduino /ras.  device interfaces and programming for new instrument controls and interfacing data acquisition type controllers. Programming skills needed to write or customize applications using various software programs to create design work, perform diagnostics, and test equipment. Precision soldering of custom parts and custom prototype boards required. Provide routine preventative maintenance for research and teaching laboratory equipment in consultation with faculty and staff.

Produce and maintain records (charts, schematics, drawings, tables, etc.) on work performed and parts procured to comply with the needs of the Electronics Shop. Maintain an effective inventory of supplies and components through analysis of supplies on hand, requests, and previous usage rates. Maintain a high standard of quality and timeliness in ordering of necessary stock and repair items.

Complete billing of work performed in an efficient and timely manner. Provide ongoing communication with customers on the status of their projects. Monitor budget and funding of the shop in conjunction with the Building Manager and/or Chief Administrator.

Advise and assist faculty, students, and staff regarding electronic related needs, questions, and problems. Teach and train other technicians, students, and staff as needed. Oversee daily operations and work of temporary employees. Identify and communicate with instrument manufacturers, their service personnel and other technical resources to obtain information, parts, schematics, hardware, software, etc. necessary to maintain instruments.

Keep abreast of current technologies and practices through trade journals and on-line sources. Maintain certifications as needed.

Required Qualifications*

Technical and/or Associates degree in Electronics and 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of experience and education. Strong programming and software customization skills needed. Familiarity with basic and advanced test equipment such as multi-meters and oscilloscopes. Circuit board and power supply repair experience. Ability to understand a project’s scientific intent, provide insight and evaluation of possible approaches. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to exercise diplomacy and work effectively with a diverse group of people. Ability and motivation to promote a culture of respect and cooperation among a work team.

Desired Qualifications*

Five or more years electronics experience in an academic or research setting. Past experience in a research laboratory setting is highly desirable. Experience with National Instruments (or equivalent) hardware including analog and digital input/output, counter/timer, serial, RS232, and PCI/USB devices. Circuit board, instrument control, and power supply design experience. Familiarity with computer interface and data collection software, e.g. Labview. Training and/or experience in chemistry, or related field with electronics design and application skills. Demonstrated ability in the day to day management of an electronics shop or business a plus.
