Job Summary

Rackham Graduate School seeks six (6) part-time (20 hours per week) temporary Program Assistants to provide assistance with the execution of the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP), Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS), and the Ready for Rackham (R4R) programming.

These positions run from May 1, 2020 through August 31, 2020; availability during the appointment period is critical. Personal commitments that would require absence for an extended amount of time will eliminate applicants from consideration.  Currently, we are planning to offer the programs as an in-person experience. Decisions to move the program to a virtual format offering will be made following public health guidance from the State of Michigan and the University of Michigan. Staff will be notified of any and all changes to the program in a timely fashion.

Ready for Rackham (R4R) is a one-month residential program at University of Michigan designed to support undergraduate students preparation for doctoral study by examining the benefits of the research experience, engaging students in research and scholarly activities, demystifying the graduate school experience at a research university and supporting the preparation of a Graduate Admissions Portfolio. Programming for R4R will take place from July 5 to July 30, 2021.

PLEASE NOTE: Late afternoon and early evening work will be required; possible weekend work may be required with advance notice. Schedule varies based on the needs of programs.

Responsibilities*

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to: Work with professional staff in the Rackham Graduate School to assist in the execution of activities that will be part of the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP), Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS) and Ready for Rackham. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Assisting academic program manager with the execution of program content; working closely  with Rackham staff, departmental faculty, and other university administrators to plan event logistics; facilitating cohort building activities; administration of seminars; meeting with participants individually and in small groups; assisting students with graduate school applications; one-on-one meetings with student participants; assisting with the development of program evaluation tools; facilitating communication between staff and participants; anticipating and resolving participant problems or concerns; completing related administrative tasks such as  drafting documents, data entry, data management, and attending weekly  meetings.

Required Qualifications*

  • At least one year of graduate school experience at the University of Michigan
  • Familiarity with diversity issues in higher education and specifically the challenges faced by underrepresented populations
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience delivering the required qualifications in both in-person and virtual formats, including familiarity with Canvas, Zoom, and other virtual platforms
  • Demonstrated experience in and understanding of program development and  implementation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to maintain  confidentiality in matters of a sensitive and confidential nature
  • Ability to handle multiple projects with excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work as part of a team and capacity to exercise independent initiative;
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Knowledge of personal computer productivity tools including word processing,  spreadsheets, presentation and electronic communication, social media, and  calendaring software packages 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience in SROP, MICHHERS and/or R4R
  • Reasonable knowledge of University and departmental policies and procedures,  University organization, and University protocol and governance
  • Research and scholarly interest in graduate student development.
