Job Summary

The Hospital Section of the Department of Psychiatry is seeking an Advanced Practice Professional (NP or PA) to provide direct patient care under the immediate supervision of a psychiatry faculty member primarily on the adult psychiatric consultation/-liaison service, with additional duties occasionally possible on the adult psychiatry inpatient unit (9C), Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), and Adult Psychiatry Partial Hospital Program (PHP).

Responsibilities on the Adult Psychiatry Consultation/Liaison service (primary service):

  • Perform initial assessments on medical-surgical patients for whom psychiatry consultations are sought and present findings to the faculty psychiatrist.
  • Write consultation notes.
  • See follow-up patients and write continuing consultation notes as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the faculty and multidisciplinary team on the C/L service.
  • Contribute to the ongoing educational efforts of psychiatry to the medical-surgical services regarding common mental health issues.


Responsibilities for the Adult Psychiatry Partial Hospital Program (when assigned):

  • Assist with program development. Assist with plans of transitions of care to and from the PHP. Perform initial and follow-up assessments on patients referred to and within the program. Act as the primary provider for the PHP and collaborate with the faculty psychiatrist as appropriate.


Responsibilities in Psychiatric Emergency Services (when assigned):

  • Perform initial assessments on patients in PES and present findings to the faculty psychiatrist. Write evaluation notes. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to make appropriate disposition plans for patients. Educate patients and families as indicated. Assist with transitions of care from PES.


Responsibilities on 9C (when assigned):

  • Perform initial assessments and present findings to the faculty psychiatrist. Write admission H&Ps. Conduct daily rounds on continuing stay patients and write appropriate orders. Write daily progress notes. Monitor medical tests and consult other services as needed. Collaborate with the faculty and multidisciplinary team on the treatment plan. Participate in family meetings as needed. Assist with transitions of care to and from 9C.

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications (NP):

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Minimum of (1) year experience as a clinician in a psychiatric setting.
  • Current DEA registration required

Required Qualifications (PA):

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum of (1) year experience as a clinician in a psychiatric setting.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required  
  • Current DEA registration required

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in psychiatric consultation on medical-surgical inpatients
  • Experience as a clinician in a medical-surgical setting
  • Experience in quality improvement and/or program development.
  • Experience developing and using standardized metrics / implementation of measurement based care surveys, preferably within an electronic medical record.
  • Experience with crisis de-escalation techniques in agitated patients.


Work Schedule

Hours:  40 hours per week 
Primarily Day Shift (Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm)
Occasional evening/weekend coverage may be required
