Integrative Systems + Design (ISD) is a top ranked division within the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan that offers six pre-eminent interdisciplinary programs. As a key member of the ISD leadership team, the Assistant Director provides the on-going leadership to identify, analyze, develop, execute, and evaluate engagement and communications strategies that support ISD’s vision, mission, portfolio of programs, and partnerships. The Assistant Director supervises and manages the ISD team responsible for engagement, communications, marketing, and recruitment initiatives, coordinates their efforts across other teams and initiatives, and ensures alignment with ISD leadership, college, and university priorities. Responsibilities include the strategic assessment of organization needs, the identification of potential opportunities and partnerships, and the development and implementation of supporting initiatives.

The ideal candidate is a creative, collaborative, and visionary leader with significant experience and a strong background that enables best practices in implementing effective and innovative engagement and communication strategies; has meaningful experience working with diverse global audiences across multiple communications channels; and brings a dedication to quality and customer service that will ensure all efforts are at the highest level.  

Responsibilities*

Strategic Marketing and Communications: (30%)

  • Responsible for the full range of marketing and communications efforts for ISD including ensuring a clear vision, rationale, effective strategies, and an optimized framework for implementation and continuous assessment. 
  • Analysis:  Identify, gather data on, and analyze marketing and communications needs, opportunities, and trends; evaluate and recommend best practice strategies to highlight ISD’s innovation, value-added difference, and impacts.
  • Planning:  Develop and manage short- and long-term strategic goals, objectives, and implementation plans for ISD’s marketing and communications portfolio that are in alignment with ISD’s overall strategic framework; include appropriate delivery methods and the coordination of efforts with other initiatives.
  • Implementation:  Provide the experienced leadership for the full breadth of ISD marketing and communications activities such as: content development, websites, branding, cohesive messaging, editorial calendars, media design, social media, promotional activities, events, multimedia (photo, video), print and digital approaches, advertising, collateral, media relations, public relations, advertising, etc. 
  • Assessment:  Establish and manage metrics, feedback loops, and evaluation tools; track and analyze data on the effectiveness and return on investment of marketing and communications activities; effect on-going continuous improvement.
  • Events:  Collaborate in ISD’s involvement in conferences, educational/career fairs, trade shows, and other networking or informational events; may attend events to assist in representing ISD programs.
  • Environment:  Maintain an awareness of related news, events, trends, and competitors across the university, in the region (i.e. industry partners), nationally, and globally.
  • Networks:  Serve as a liaison between ISD and other relevant university units or partners as appropriate; manage the college embedded communication relationship; manage relevant requests for information; network across ISD, the college, and university to ensure effective implementation of initiatives.

Management and Administrative: (25%)

  • Lead, supervise, and pro-actively manage an integrated team of staff responsible for ISD’s marketing, communications, recruitment, and engagement initiatives.
  • Interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; conduct performance appraisals; mentor on-going professional development; establish back-up cross-training; support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
  • In conjunction with ISD administrative staff, develop, monitor, and manage activity budgets, resources, equipment, and collateral associated with the team’s responsibilities.
  • Develop and manage informational, data, and statistical presentations, reports, templates, etc.; collaboratively obtain, verify, and summarize data and information; present to a variety of audiences. 
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and utilization of management information, IT, or other resources, systems, and tools.
  • Provide the leadership for pro-active problem-solving and a systems perspective for resolution.
  • Participate in fostering effective and integrated connections, workflows, activities, and communications between and across teams and stakeholders.
  • Engage in professional development activities related to position responsibilities.

Strategic Engagement: (20%)

  • Provide leadership and management for a range of strategic engagement initiatives for ISD, including a clear rationale, goals, effective strategies, and an optimized framework for implementation and assessment. 
  • Analysis:  Identify, gather data on, analyze, recommend, build, and manage external (business, government, non-profit, academia, etc.) and internal (faculty, research institutes, departments, etc.) strategies for ISD program partnerships, opportunities, and initiatives.  
  • Planning:  With ISD Leadership, develop and manage short- and long-term strategic goals, objectives, and implementation plans for ISD’s strategic engagement that are in alignment with ISD’s overall strategic framework; include appropriate methods and the coordination of efforts with other initiatives.
  • Implementation:  Under ISD leadership direction, facilitate strategic processes in key areas such as: building a relevant community of practice; establishing program competitive advantage and reputation in rapidly changing fields; solidifying the ISD brand and global identity; relationships with external industry partners (in conjunction with the college and university); building connections with key university faculty and staff to support relationships and initiatives; building recruitment partnerships with key feeder schools; etc. 
  • Assessment:  Establish and manage metrics, feedback loops, and evaluation tools; track and analyze data on the effectiveness of engagement strategies; effect on-going continuous improvement.
  • Outreach:  Provide leadership and management for alumni and donor engagement efforts.
  • Resources:  Manage and implement a range of effective data gathering tools, environmental scans, competitor analysis initiatives, collaborative models, etc.
  • Students:  Participate in collaboratively optimizing student engagement over the full life cycle spectrum (recruitment, career development, capstones/experiential learning, partnerships, alumni, etc.).
  • Networks:  Serve as a liaison between ISD and other relevant university units or partners as appropriate; manage relevant requests for information about ISD; network across ISD, the college, and university to ensure effective implementation of initiatives.

Recruitment: (15%)

  • Provide leadership and management for the full range of ISD’s recruiting efforts including ensuring a clear vision, rationale, effective strategies, and an optimized framework for implementation and continuous assessment. 
  • Manage the development and execution of strategic goals, objectives, and implementation plans for ISD’s recruitment portfolio that are in alignment with ISD’s goals to attract and retain diverse, high quality student cohorts; ensure coordination with college and university-wide recruitment initiatives.
  • Establish metrics, feedback loops, and evaluation tools; track and analyze data on the effectiveness and return on investment of recruitment activities; effect on-going continuous improvement.

Overall Strategic Leadership: (10%)

  • As a key member of the ISD leadership team, participate in developing, implementing, and assessing strategic goals, plans, policies, and procedures for the unit.
  • Serve on relevant ISD, college, or university committees and working groups.
  • Meaningfully contribute to ISD, college, and university diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. 
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in, marketing, communications, business administration, management, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of higher-level professional experience in related roles.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience and all related personnel management aspects. 
  • Significant professional experience developing, executing, managing, and assessing a full spectrum of marketing and communications strategies for internal and external audiences via multimedia, digital, and traditional channels, social media, paid marketing, and web-based tools and technologies.
  • A strong track record in identifying, analyzing, crafting, and leading strategies to build and maintain relationships and effective initiatives, both internally and externally.
  • General awareness of best practices for the recruitment, retention, and development of students.
  • Experience in analyzing needs, opportunities, and trends, establishing metrics, tracking and analyzing data, and effecting on-going continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience in bringing diverse constituents together and facilitating effective outcomes. 
  • Excellent project management, organizational, analytical, creative, and critical thinking skills involving multi-faceted initiatives, with a demonstrated ability to successfully meet stated needs and strategy goals.
  • Strong collaborative working style with the ability to work both independently and as a leader or member of a team in a flexible, dynamic environment, and to contribute to a positive work environment that values respect, listening, and learning.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written, presentation, interpersonal, and networking skills that show the ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels of participants, partners, and audiences.
  • Demonstrated awareness and implementation of best practices in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, and working with diverse groups of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to respectfully and diplomatically communicate and work collaboratively with individuals of all backgrounds and at all organizational levels.
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google applications (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs), Adobe Suite, MBox, and other business and communications tools and systems in a PC environment. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • An advanced degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • An awareness of engineering fields is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
