The Yan Zhang laboratory in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School is recruiting a highly motivated and competent individual for a full-time research lab technician associate position. The applicant will work closely with the principle investigator (Dr. Yan Zhang) and other laboratory scientists on innovative research projects at the interface of biochemistry, CRISPR-Cas, bacteriology and mammalian genome engineering. We are looking for a broadly trained molecular biologist excited about fundamental mechanisms as well as method development. This research lab technician is expected to be a key partner and collaborator for many lab members, his/her scientific contributions will be recognized as co-authorship on abstract and publications whenever appropriate. Please note that this is a two (2) year, term-limited position, with the possibility of contract renewal.

This position involves two major activities: providing technical support for various research projects and participating in general laboratory management. Detailed responsibilities are listed below. Prior training in at least some of these areas is required; the rest can be developed through training and experience.
Plasmid construction/cloning, general molecular biology assays, protein purification, biochemical characterization of CRISPR-Cas enzymes, genetic manipulation and culturing of bacteria strains.
Participate in routine laboratory maintenance (managing lab supplies, preparing lab stocks [media, agar plates, buffers, etc], inventory keeping, record keeping, compliance with University of Michigan regulations, compliance in lab safety and OSEH regulations, etc), and assist in orienting and mentoring temporary lab staff, undergraduates and junior graduate students in laboratory techniques and equipment operation as needed.
Participating and presenting in weekly lab meetings.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to read scientific literature and discern relevant information, allowing an intellectual contribution along with their technical research work. Applicants with additional qualifications and experience are also highly encouraged to apply with a possibility to be hired at a more senior level.
HS Diploma or Associate Degree, with at least 1 years experience in a laboratory setting. Accurate record-keeping, scientific rigor, and attention to detail are essential along with the ability to communicate, interact, and work closely with others. Extensive experience in molecular biology is highly preferred. The successful applicant will be a motivated, ambitious person looking to advance their training and career in research. Applicants with additional qualifications and experience are strongly encouraged to apply with a possibility to be hired at a more senior level.
Bachelor Degree preferred in Biology or a related discipline
