The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR, is part of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan. The consortium maintains the world’s largest archive of social science data with 10,000+ studies relating to education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and more. A global leader in data science, ICPSR also supports continuing education in research design, statistics, and data analysis.

The team at ICPSR is creating meaningful impact by enabling researchers across domains to make new discoveries. Our project work and design systems span mobile and web interfaces. We also have a lot of fun doing it. We are at an exciting moment in our growth. We are looking to establish a product design practice that is user-centered, collaborative and delivery-driven. As a product designer, you will report to the Computing & Network Services user experience team lead. Working with your fellow designers, engineers and product owners, you will form the foundations of a design practice that brings users, technology and business together in very meaningful ways. You will help transform ICPSR from being design-aware to being design-driven.


You Will:

  • Advocate for design
  • Mentor and manage your fellow designers. You are responsible for their career growth.
  • Engage deeply in all parts of the design process: concept development, creative visualization, user research and testing, User Experience (UX) writing, system design, prototyping, and delivery.
  • Work as part of an Agile software development team, with two week design sprints being completed prior to the two week development sprint
  • Help create web front-ends with a modern technology stack
  • Create user flows, wireframes, mockups and prototypes that lead to intuitive user experiences.
  • Take a user-centered design approach and test and iterate your designs.
  • Identify design problems and design elegant solutions.
  • Ask smart questions, take risks and champion new ideas.
  • Accomplish other tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in UX, a similar field, or equivalent experience
  • 5 or more years of experience with Lean User Experience (UX), including user-centered design, conducting user research, personas, journey maps, user testing, A/B testing, rapid prototyping, heuristic analysis, usability and accessibility concerns. Portfolio should include items from two week (or shorter) design sprints.
  • Experience planning and leading Continuous Customer Discovery.
  • Experience scoping and leading the design and creation of MVPs.
  • Experience with designing and facilitating co-creation sessions such as Google Ventures Design Sprints and Gamestorming.
  • Experience setting a product design direction for and creating and adhering to a design system(s).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping at a range of different fidelities (Paper, Digital, Experiential etc), including knowledge of when to use which prototype and to what end.
  • Experience leading usability testing efforts and converting feedback into tangible outcomes for product roadmap.

Desired Qualifications*

  • 3 or more years of experience leading design teams
  • Experience with social science or academic research fields.
  • Experience with full stack software engineering, UI component design, and frameworks, technologies, and techniques such as NodeJS, React, NextJS, Jamstack, single page web apps, search-engine optimization, REST & GraphQL API.
  • 4 or more years of experience working with an Agile software development team.
  • Experience evangelizing the value of design and growing a design team.

You will be asked to share a portfolio or show other work samples.

Underfill Statement

This position may be filled at the senior level with a salary range of $75,000-95,000. Lesser-experienced candidates will be reviewed at the intermediate level with a salary range of $65,000-75,000.

We are currently working remotely due to the ongoing pandemic. This is expected to continue until Fall 2021.  When face-to-face work resumes, this position will require being on-site at our offices in Ann Arbor.
