Job Summary

The Campus Climate Support Coordinator reports to the Assistant Dean of Students and is responsible for functions including: coordination of Campus Climate Support; providing direct support services to students of concern or in crisis; serving on the team responsible for providing support, resources, and referrals to students; and contributing to the functions of the Dean of Students Office through support of its administrative, student support, and crisis management functions. The Campus Climate Support Coordinator sustains and expands upon current Student Life Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and engages in effective practices intended to support students experiencing challenges associated with campus climate.

Department Summary

In support of the mission of Student Life, the Dean of Students Office promotes student development and enhances the Michigan experience through programs, services, partnerships/connections, and policy development that promote an inclusive campus climate and facilitates the successful navigation of campus life. The core work of the Dean of Students Office includes promoting a safe, respectful, healthy, and inclusive campus community, providing support services and managing critical incidents impacting students and the campus community, and recognizing and responding to emerging needs within the student population.


Campus Climate Concern Response Efforts (35%)

A campus climate concern can include actions that discriminate, stereotype, exclude, harass, or harm anyone in the U-M community based on their identity (such as race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, or religion). Campus climate concern response efforts ensure a coordinated and comprehensive response to concerns related to discrimination and harassment that are affecting students. Staff members coordinate a response utilizing multi-disciplinary expertise to support community members involved in or impacted by a campus climate concern and coordinate proactive and reactive educational efforts within the campus community regarding the impact of harm. Campus climate concern response efforts also ensure that faculty and staff concerns are addressed by the appropriate University office and process.


  • As part of the Dean of Students Office, receives and triages reports of climate concerns and reviews them with designated campus and community partners for support and response. 
  • Provides support to students impacted or targeted by campus climate incidents with navigating impacts and effects by meeting with them to discuss options and collaboratively create potential next steps.
  • Operationalizes and supports an ad hoc team of unit leaders to have a broad view across campus of the climate and major/community incidents by providing data and statistics and being a central point of contact for all incidents and reports.
  • Analyzes and reviews case data to identify trends, concerns, and hotspots and elevates issues to appropriate campus units for potential programmatic improvements.
  • Assists with providing appropriate and effective coordination and communication between multiple campus offices including staff members in the academic units, DEI leads involved in the response to campus climate incidents impacting students on and off campus, and others who are providing support to individuals and groups targeted.
  • Develops and maintains a strong working relationship with various campus partners in order to successfully navigate the complex climate issues, advise students, and act as a liaison when needed.  This may include units such as  Multi Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA), the Trotter Multicultural Center, the Office for Institutional Equity, the Office of Student Conflict Resolution, the Office of the General Counsel, University of Michigan Police Department, University Housing, Residence Education, Housing Security, and other units for incident response management, advocacy and processes. 
  • Serves as a process advocate by assisting students in understanding and appropriately navigating the campus climate incident response process.
  • Refers students impacted by campus climate incidents to potentially beneficial campus services and programs.
  • Represents Campus Climate Support by attending various meetings including the campus DEI committees and work groups within Student Life as well as other relevant teams and meetings.
  • Provides summative information on support efforts for particular incidents.
  • Responds to requests for information about Campus Climate Support.


Manage Expect Respect Program Initiatives (25%)

  • Implements annual initiatives to promote campus Expect Respect program and maintains Expect Respect website.
  • Recruits, hires, trains and supervises student Expect Respect program assistant(s).
  • Partners with other units to support campus and divisional social justice educational initiatives.
  • Assists in enacting cultural appropriation prevention initiatives.
  • Collaborates with schools/colleges to ensure consistent messaging about the Expect Respect campaign.
  • Collaborates with the Office of New Student Programs to ensure annual Expect Respect messaging begins in orientation programs.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with identity-based student organizations.
  • Creates and distributes marketing materials.
  • Creates website content as needed to address current campus questions/issues, as well as identify appropriate content from other subject matter experts (i.e. MESA/Trotter, Spectrum, SAPAC)


Critical Incident Case Management (25%)

Critical incident and student support work includes intervening to provide support to students experiencing situations affecting their ability to be successful at Michigan, including responding to reports of concerns for well-being and/or unusual, disruptive, or disturbing behavior. Critical incident response includes providing direct support to students experiencing personal, social, physical health, mental health, financial, academic, behavioral, and/or other difficulties who would benefit from intervention and referrals to on and off-campus resources and to ensure they receive developmentally appropriate support.



  • Coordinates appropriate, comprehensive, and effective intervention and communication between multiple university offices, academic units, health care providers, and community resources to meet student health, academic, financial, housing, social, and other needs.
  • Assesses individual student needs and assists students in identifying, locating, organizing, and accessing necessary services and resources.
  • Guides and supports students, parents, faculty, and staff as needed in navigating university policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Serves on the Critical Incident Team of the Dean of Students Office, assisting students on a rotating schedule.
  • Provides a safe listening space in which to offer compassion, support, and guidance to students.
  • Teaches/coaches students to develop and demonstrate problem solving and self-advocacy skills.
  • Assists students in locating and obtaining emergency funding in crisis situations.
  • Educates students regarding their rights and responsibilities as a member of the university community.
  • Provides rotating after hours (evening and weekend) on-call support for the Dean of Students Office.
  • Facilitates notification to academic units of critical incidents on behalf of students as necessary.


Impact Training Responsibilities (10%)

  • Provides logistical and administrative coordination for Impact Training sessions.
  • Participates in the curriculum and content development, planning and implementation, and assessment efforts.
  • Serves as a member of the Impact Training presentation team.
  • Coordinates training for and assignments of volunteer staff presenters.
  • Identifies future training needs and creates an action plan to facilitate the appropriate training for presentations.


General Administrative Responsibilities (5%)

  • Contributes to the daily functioning of the Dean of Students Office through support of its administrative, on-call, and crisis management responsibilities.
  • Prepares or coordinates the preparation of special and periodic reports.
  • Assures compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Represents the Dean of Students Office to other university departments and the campus community through participation on relevant committees and in various training and presentation opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the Dean of Students Office.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Counseling, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of progressively responsible graduate or professional experience in student affairs administration within a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with a dynamic, diverse, and engaged student population, both individually and in groups; experience working with individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences.
  • Experience managing complex situations involving students, parents, staff, faculty, and community members.
  • Experience managing multiple and competing priorities

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with diversity and inclusion education, programs, or services.
  • Strong working knowledge of student development theory and its application.
  • Experience with implementation of student affairs programs including proactive and responsive campus climate initiatives.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency (word processing, spreadsheet, and database systems).
