There will be 250,000 new patients diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the United States. The treatments used to manage breast cancer have greatly enhanced patient survivorship. However, these same procedures may come at a significant functional cost as patients commonly report shoulder pain, restricted mobility, and difficulty performing activities of daily living. The Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Imaging Laboratory at the University of Michigan seeks to better understand the mechanisms driving these impairments in breast cancer patients to develop therapeutic strategies that improve post-operative function in women after mastectomy and breast reconstruction.
If you are interested in exploring these questions further, then this research opportunity could be a great fit for you! We are looking for a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to work on a funded four-year American Cancer Society grant exploring neuromuscular changes to shoulder and muscle function in breast cancer patients following mastectomy and breast. This postdoctoral fellowship will provide the applicant with training in biomechanics, ultrasound imaging, wearable inertial measurement sensors and clinical oncology.
Applications must have a Ph.D. in Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Biomedical Engineering, or related field. The ideal candidate for this position will also have substantial experience in human subjects experiments (motion capture, EMG, etc), and a proven track record of high quality publications. Knowledge of biomechanics, ultrasound imaging, clinical outcomes, signal processing, and statistics would be highly beneficial for this position. In addition to the technical skills outlined above, ideal candidates should have excellent analytical and problem solving skills and must be thriving in both a team and individual environment. The candidate must also have strong organizational and communication skills.
The candidate will also be able to take advantage of all of the new and exciting research capabilities with the brand new School of Kinesiology Building (opened January 2021). This includes a multiple fully equipped high-bay biomechanics labs, brand new ultrasound scanners, a brand new dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA scanner), clinical examination rooms, an exercise training suite, and more!
