As part of the largest college at the University of Michigan, LSA Finance employs more than 90 employees who provide financial, research administration, and procurement support to over 100 units.  We are seeking an experienced professional to serve as the Manager of Research Administration for the Haven Hall Business Office. This position will provide oversight, leadership and be the content expert of financial and research administration operations for the faculty in Social Science units.  This will include support in pre- and post-award activities, financial activities, financial transaction processing, and research reporting. This individual will work directly with the Director of Research Administration.  The Manager of Research Administration must have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to partner with colleagues at all levels and within multiple university offices.  This position requires strategic-thinking, ability to manage shifting priorities, and a proactive individual who will approach the work with a customer service orientation.

Responsibilities*

Oversee pre- and post-award process and provide support to faculty in pre- and post-award activities. Review and approve completed research proposals for accuracy and completeness prior to routing through the eResearch Proposal Management (eRPM) system for approval. Meet with faculty and administrators to discuss proposal preparation. Review and assign work to business office staff, ensuring that they follow established procedures as they review budgets for accuracy and compliance with sponsor guidelines, prepare PAF's and obtain necessary signatures, submit proposals through appropriate channels (Fastlane, grants.gov, etc.), and perform post-award management activities. 

Oversee financial activities for faculty, coordinating with the Department Manager and the LSA Business Analysts as appropriate; including processing financial transactions, managing unit defined commitments, resolving billing issues, overseeing credit card payments, calculating and budget checking summer salaries, and ensuring salaries and effort are allocated appropriately.

Supervise business office staff. Work with the Director of Research Administration to continue to strengthen and refine financial and research administration support provided to the faculty and create a highly functioning business office team. Train and develop staff on research and financial related topics, as well as, encourage engagement in and provide opportunities for training related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Assist in hiring of new staff, oversee performance management, promote, counsel, and make salary increase recommendations. Determine workflow, ensure consistency in service delivery, accuracy of work, and effective procedures and communication. Provide guidance to staff in problem resolution. Address and manage conflict within the team; foster team cohesiveness and positive morale.

Work closely with peer managers and under the direction of the Director of Research Administration, determine procedures and best business practices within the context of established LSA Finance procedures. Ensure that business office staff are trained and knowledgeable about processes.

Work closely and partner with unit chief administrators and communicate about procedures or changes to processes. Oversee documentation of procedures and review these processes for adequate controls and separation of duties. Conduct regular meetings with chief administrators and faculty to review reports and discuss research and financial issues or concerns.

Participate in LSA Finance business office managers group; attend meetings, assist with process development and special projects.  Serve as a representative of LSA Finance on University workgroups.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, Typically with six years progressively responsible experience in research administration and higher level financial activities, preferably in an academic setting. Direct experience with pre- and post- award activities. Ability to develop and implement procedures, map workflow, and document processes. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Demonstrated competence in developing and refining reports, along with experience and detailed knowledge of transaction processing and general financial activities. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels and with varying levels of research administration and financial knowledge; demonstrated ability to work under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities, demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, ability to complete tasks in a timely manner, adaptive to a changing environment. Prior experience in functional or direct supervision of staff and the skills to effectively lead others and build a strong team. Ability to promote a continued positive culture amongst staff and units. Track record in partnering and meeting high customer service standards, while motivating staff to do the same.

Desired Qualifications*

Certified Research Administrator (CRA). Knowledge of UM financial practices and processes strongly preferred.  Prior experience with federal funding agencies such as NSF and NIH strongly preferred. Experience with databases, query management tools and University systems, such as Business Objects, M-Reports, Concur, and other M-Pathways systems. Experience with eResearch electronic PAF and proposal submission. 

  • Prior experience contributing to the development of others through mentoring or training.
