Multifaceted research experience in the area metabolism and diabetes research.We work with new techniques to improve blood glucose control towards a cure for diabetes mellitus. The laboratory uses mouse and cell-based models to study the function of insulin producing cells. We are seeking to establish cell- and animal-based functional assays of insulin-producing cells.

Executing tasks under direction as well as independently, assisting research staff, interacting with staff from other laboratories and simple training of new research staff and students, as necessary.
The work will require learning and establishing mouse islet isolation and culture procedures and establishing functional assays with isolated mouse islets (cells that make hormones). Analysis of the data generated from these assays. This work requires technical skills and aptitude to work with small devices and learning simple computer software.
Executing research laboratory tasks, keeping records of the work performed, analyzing data and generating graphical representation of the data.
The work will lnclude maintaining the mouse colony, including breeding, tagging, tailing, and genotyping. Prepare and oversee stocks of general-use solutions for the laboratory. Assist other lab members in large complex experiments.
Some sample processing and data collection and management. Maintain laboratory documentation for experimental analysis. Help to oversee and maintain condition and cleanliness of the lab, including instrument maintenance- Coordinate service when necessary.
The position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years experience in research laboratory work. Candidates should be experienced with celluar molecular biology techniques (PCR, Western-immunoblot, gel imaging - preferred) and be comfortable working with mice, cell culture systems and microscopy.
Superior organizational, time-management and multitasking skills are required as well as proficiency in using standard computer software (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Filemaker, Prism GraphPad).
A keen interest in using modern technology and willing to learn to work with new technical devices are highly desirable. Technical skills related to the use of modern laboratory equipment (microscopes, plate readers etc) will be an asset.
The position is a full time position (8 hours starting at approximately 8:30 am/9am). But biological research requires flexibility in hours; and extra work hours as required by the particular work/experiments. Occasional work may be necessary on weekends.
This is a one- year term limited position with the possibility of extension. Extension will be based on the availability of funding and performance.
