The d3lab is a vibrant interdisciplinary research program at the Survey Research Center (SRC) of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan with strong ties across campus including the Departments of Biostatistics, Statistics, Psychology and the Medical School. d3lab faculty develop innovative methods at the intersections of behavioral science and statistical science. d3lab also facilitates the training of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows who will contribute in significant ways to the development of statistical methodology for the advancement of empirical behavioral sciences research. The successful applicant will have exceptional resources to facilitate their research, including access to administrative support staff, any required hardware and software, and travel funds for at least one scientific conference annually. The position is for two years, with excellent possibility of re-funding for at least one additional year subject to annual progress evaluations. The d3lab at the Survey Research Center (SRC) of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work on the development, advancement, and dissemination of statistical and machine learning approaches for building highly efficacious Adaptive Interventions. This includes developing methods for the design or analysis of Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial (SMART) design, Micro-Randomized Trials (MRTs) and related trial designs. Of particular interest is a candidate with experience or an interest in developing methods for these trial designs using intensively collected longitudinal data. The selected candidate will collaborate on research with an interdisciplinary team. Duties include developing new methods; conducting data analyses, including data arising from a SMART or MRTs; participating in preparing conference presentations and scientific articles for publication; interfacing with behavioral scientists who are collaborators or potential collaborators in this research; and participating in team teaching of courses and workshops. A particular emphasis of d3lab’s scholarship is on dissemination of methods, to ensure they are placed directly into the hands of data analysts who will use them. There will be opportunities for authorship on publications, including first authorship, and preparing applications for external funding.
- Ph.D. in behavioral or health sciences; or Ph.D. in statistics or biostatistics with a demonstrated interest in the behavioral or health sciences, particularly intervention science, will also be considered.
- Strong computation and data management skills.
- Strong statistical and machine learning methodological skills and interests.
- An interest in the development and application of statistical methods for use by behavioral, bio-behavioral or educational intervention scientists.
- Strong communication skills.
- Excellent written and oral English communication skills are required.
- Background in any of the following areas will be considered a plus: substance use or HIV risk behavior; longitudinal data analysis; machine learning; causal inference; and experimental design, particularly factorial experiments.
- The ideal candidate will have demonstrated productivity in terms of published journal articles and scientific conference presentations.
