The Anantharam lab is currently seeking a postdoctoral fellow with a background in patch-clamp electrophysiology and synaptic biology. As the selected candidate, you will join a young and dynamic research team whose goal is to understand the molecular and cellular regulation of hormone secretion from the adrenal medulla. The adrenal medulla is innervated by sympathetic neurons that house and secrete important neurotransmitters (NPY, PACAP, acetylcholine). However, the mechanisms that shape and control transmission at this synapse, during physiological and pathophysiological conditions, are not well understood. In fact, our knowledge of the molecular operation of autonomic synapses generally lags far behind what we know about those in the brain. We expect the proposed work to bridge that gap.
This NIH-supported research project will employ a combination of optical methods, fluorescent proteins (genetically-encoded voltage and calcium indicators, channelrhodopsins, etc.), and electrophysiology to learn how calcium sensing, synaptic modulation, and plasticity are regulated in the sympathetic neurons innervating the adrenal gland. The successful candidate will not only be exposed to novel research methods for studying the peripheral nervous system, but will also join a vibrant medical school department that provides numerous venues for mentorship in teaching, grant writing, and outreach.
