Job Summary

The laboratory of Jun Wu, at the Life Sciences Institute at the University of Michigan, is looking for a research laboratory technician. Projects aim to identify targets that can be exploited therapeutically for the treatment of (1) obesity and associated metabolic disorders, through regulating adaptive thermogenesis in brown and beige adipocytes and (2) alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases. The applicant will help assist with defined research projects under the guidance of a team of senior lab members. You will focus on mouse related work and molecular genetic techniques and will report directly to Dr. Wu.

Responsibilities*

You Will:

  • Handle small mammals (breeding and genotyping mouse colonies and transgenic lines)
  • Candidate may also be involved in animal experiments including mouse metabolic analyses, and harvesting of tissues
  • Compliance with University of Michigan safety and animal care regulations
  • Perform standard molecular biology experiments including DNA and RNA isolations, gel electrophoresis, PCR, and qPCR
  • Analyze and process laboratory samples
  • Mammalian cell culture
  • Demonstrate an understanding of acceptable procedures and techniques
  • Follow University safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, toxic material, and carcinogens)
  • Maintain written records of experimental results
  • Prepare reagents
  • Order of supplies and reagents

Required Qualifications*

  • High School Diploma or Associate's degree
  • 1 year of laboratory research experience
  • Prior experience designing experiments and analyzing and presenting data
  • Willing to work with mice as a model system

Desired Qualifications*

  • BS in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 1 year of Mouse breeding and colony management experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of DNA preparation and PCR experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of mouse metabolic research experience

Underfill Statement

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.  Minimum salary at the Associate level is $30,500.
