The Undergraduate Academic Advisor serves as a primary resource for CSE undergraduate students: from those interested in CSE programs through declaration, all the way to graduation. This office is a large operation serving 2000+ students, and is team-focused.
Responsibilities include providing a broad range of administrative and programmatic assistance to the CSE Advising Coordinator, the faculty Chief Program Advisors, and other faculty and staff. The advisor is the initial point of contact for undergraduate students and campus units regarding undergraduate CSE students.
This position is required to provide accurate and timely academic advising (via in-person appointments, email, phone, or video meetings) to students on curriculum, academic programming and resources, College policies and procedures; and support initiatives as led by the Advising Office and the broader CSE division

Serve as liaison on all academic matters related to department, College, and University affairs related to undergraduate students. Advisors will answer questions and work through problems related to educational needs and academic performance, counsel students and recommend appropriate services, and confer with the Coordinator and/or Chief Program Advisors on issues that require higher level decisions. This process requires independent thinking and sound judgement as well as the ability to recognize sensitive matters that need to be referred to campus/College resources and move forward in a confidential manner and within FERPA guidelines. Term-by-term duties include working with students on degree requirements, degree/success planning, course selection/registration, credit transfer, academic standing and performance concerns, letter requests, and more. Advisors will prepare documents and records for advising appointments, track and monitor student progress/outcomes, complete final degree audits, and attend relevant meetings. Additional duties for follow-up include adding notes to the online student file system, and reviewing and processing relevant forms.
Advisors are responsible for working to administer aspects of CSE’s undergraduate programs and curriculum, including both Computer Science majors, the Computer Engineering major, the Data Science major, and the Computer Science minor. They will keep current on pertinent changes within the department or Colleges that impact student degrees, student life, and future outcomes. Advisors will assist in updating advising materials both in print and on the web, including but not limited to web content, handouts, resource materials, and the College Bulletin. This role will provide accurate and timely information to faculty advisor colleagues and will work as part of the Advising Office staff team to maintain records.
Outreach, Recruitment, Special Projects- 20%
Coordinate and present at various recruitment and outreach events such as majors fair and Campus Day. Develop and execute plans for community-building events and initiatives focused on personal and community development within the CSE undergraduate population. Collaborate with other CoE/LSA offices (Engineering Career Resource Center, etc.) and CSE student groups to support additional student events and initiatives surrounding career development, extracurricular involvement. Identify opportunities for new or improved services within the CSE Advising Office (walk-in hours, group declaration sessions, information sessions for prospective families, as examples) and work to bring them to fruition.
Position may require support of other initiatives or duties as needed and reports to the CSE Advising Coordinator.
- Bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years’ experience working in a higher education setting OR equivalent amount of education and 5-7 years experience working in a higher education setting
- Ability to successfully work with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
- Experience in student services and the ability to communicate accurate information in a context-aware and welcoming style.
- Broad knowledge of student development, advising and mentoring, higher education practices, U-M procedures, and campus resources.
- Ability to work independently, exercising a high level of resourcefulness, and the ability to work in a collaborative manner on a team.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks in a high-traffic and high-demand environment.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Understanding of the importance of inclusion, demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
- Master’s degree in student affairs, student services, higher education administration, student development, counseling, social work, or similar.
- Relevant experiences working one-on-one with students in a counseling or advising setting.
- Experience working with high-performing students, and with students in academic trouble.
- Knowledge of career trends in STEM fields.
- Working familiarity with the MPathways Student Administration System, Business Objects, and the Google suite of applications.
A higher salary will be considered for an exceptionally qualified candidate.
Interviews will take place in May. The goal for the starting date is late May to early June.
