Job Summary

The Life Sciences Institute is looking for an experienced Project Manager to partner with the Director of Michigan Drug Discovery in advancing drug discovery research at the University of Michigan (U-M).

With its administrative home in the Life Sciences Institute, Michigan Drug Discovery (MDD) is a campus-wide program created to support and fund drug discovery research at the University of Michigan. MDD provides ongoing funding for early stage projects, and provides consulting to investigators engaged in drug discovery research broadly defined. MDD staff participate in development discussions and help identify opportunities for U-M investigators to work with external partners.

You will report to the Director of Michigan Drug Discovery and be the primary contact for U-M investigators. In partnership with the MDD Director, the project manager is involved in strategic planning and the development of initiatives to grow drug discovery research and educate the community about available resources.

You will work independently and will enjoy the respect of the myriad partners and stakeholders within the U-M biomedical community. As a supporting participant in early drug discovery research teams, you will facilitate project team meetings; communicate with campus and external stakeholders; oversee project reporting and financial progress; obtain appropriate project approvals and supporting documentation; and develop workshops and educational programs.

  • Administer the request and review processes for grant funding from MDD
  • Portfolio tracking including progress versus milestones and budgets
  • Review program impact through collection and analysis of important metrics
  • Participation in project startup activities, including communication of applicable account information to new grant awardees
  • Triage inquiries on project funding, spend allowance and related questions
  • Coordinate collaborative project teams including organizing and facilitating project team meetings and periodic project reviews
  • Conduct MDD communications including notice of funding opportunities and administration of the MDD website
  • Obtain monthly financial reports for MDD funded projects using UM financial systems and sending reports to grant awardees highlighting available balance
  • Work with LSI finance team to provide financial information and ensure appropriate spend aligned with approved MDD budget
  • Active participation in meetings with partners and follow-up to ensure the completion of important action items
  • Communicate and coordinate with campus partners to help promote drug discovery research and education
  • Develop professional relationships with external partners and compliance with all University and partner expectations and regulations
  • Participation in periodic planning and execution of professional events

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree in biological sciences, chemistry or a related discipline
  • Minimum of five (5) years post-graduate experience in drug discovery project management
  • Proven ability to communicate successfully and work productively with partners across multiple disciplines and skill sets
  • Experience with project management software and website management tools
  • Experience with data management systems, including understanding financial details and associated fiscal reporting

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in biological sciences, chemistry or a related discipline, or certification in project management
