Job Summary

The Department of Radiology at Michigan Medicine of the University of Michigan has an immediate opening at the Regular Temp level for individuals interested in the development and application of advanced image-based analytical techniques in the field of thoracic radiology. The overarching goal of this role is to convert image data into biologically or clinically meaningful quantitative results.  Candidate will support faculty and staff in analyzing data from clinical imaging modalities such as CT and MRI. The candidate will be responsible to assisting faculty and staff to parallel batch processing of large multi-dimensional data using the high performance computing cluster. 

Responsibilities*

  • Collaborate with supervisors, and other team members to understand image analysis goals and conceptualize solution strategies (10%).
  • Independently conceive and write code, often leveraging existing tools, that efficiently executes desired analysis objectives. Find alternative solutions to time constrained or technically limiting issues.  Debug and troubleshoot effectively. (65%).
  • Collaborate with IT and ARC-TS departments to ensure efficient data transfer, management and processing on the HPC cluster (10%).
  • Assist with teaching of imaging analysis strategies to other lab members and as outreach to prospective customers (5%).
  • Stay informed of industry standards, new technologies and programming techniques. Research and resolve unclear or missing tools (10%).

Required Qualifications*

M.S. in a quantitative or computational science with 4-6 years of experience performing image analysis on at least one of the above listed imaging modalities.  Must have demonstrated expertise in scientific programming, knowledge of signal processing and machine learning, and familiarity with existing image analysis software.  Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English with ability to work in a diverse laboratory environment. The applicant should be detail oriented, show a willingness to learn new skills, and work both independently and as a team player.  The applicant must be ambitious, talented, and self-motivated with an interest in leveraging our research interests, as this position emphasizes the ability to learn new concepts and skills quickly.

Desired Qualifications*

PhD desired. In addition to required qualifications, candidate must demonstrate expertise in computational science and image analysis with first-author publications.  Experience, in some combination, with computer engineering, applied mathematics, image processing, machine learning, algorithm design, and software development using C++, Python, MATLAB, and/or R.  Knowledge of common image analysis libraries (relevant MATLAB toolboxes, scikit-image, ITK etc.).  Understanding of challenges of transferring and analyzing large datasets (e.g. too big for RAM) and knowledge of GPU programming/parallelization and image compression strategies is a plus.  Broad knowledge of capabilities of commercially available analysis packages such as FIJI, ARIVIS, CHIMERA, 3D-SLICER, PMOD etc..
