Job Summary

The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan (AAUM) is seeking a UX and UI Lead to join the user experience team that is an integral part of the AAUM’s digital transformation plan. The user experience team is responsible for creating exceptional digital experiences that achieve organizational goals and delight alumni across a wide range of digital channels or platforms, including web, social and mobile. Team members help translate user research into prioritized work to design for impact. Provide the expertise on integrating and developing best practices in usability, accessibility, and cross-platform strategy to maintain user-centricity. The team collaborates with marketing, creative, data and technology team members and program teams across the organization. As a key member of the UX team, the UX lead (manager) will be responsible for leading the team and creating design experiences that attract our audience. Evaluate current experiences, lead design and create user experiences that are simple, intuitive, and consistent across program areas and platforms.

  • Develop and implement digital experiences to simplify alumni experience and delivery for various programs and platforms. This includes helping design digital experiences for customer acquisition, engagement, and retention using web and mobile channels.

  • Translate user insights into UX strategies and serve as a point of contact for UX efforts for digital products for program, technology, and the marketing teams.

  • Lead communication and collaboration between program owners, data, brand, technology and creative teams to ensure alignment of UX deliverables.

  • Collaborate and build consensus with key stakeholders, representing the user point of view, and striking a balance between the ideal, and the realities of feasibility and delivery.

  • Maintain deep understanding of the current user experience, business objectives, audience, product roadmaps, features, design trends and best practices including current KPIs. 

  • Create design sketches, wireframes and end state vision or design prototypes to help inform strategy and implementation.

  • Partner with teams to continuously drive and improve content, navigation and site architecture via design, testing, and research.

  • Share a clear vision and rationale for optimized user experience and help stakeholders define a minimum viable product.

  • Ensure digital principles, standards, best practices are followed and the brand is represented accurately.

  • Maintain a prioritized list of improvements, new opportunities, maintenance items, initiating and leading efforts from a user standpoint.

  • Oversee the user experience team budget and be financially responsible (e.g., managing monthly spending, forecasting, and stewarding) for the Alumni Association’s resources by aligning programs with organizational goals.

  • Assist with team-building, mentoring UX team members, and helping educate the organization on UX best practices.

  • Effectively lead, manage and supervise the team communicating expectations, setting work schedules and priorities, providing opportunities for personal and professional growth through regular performance reviews, guidance, and encouraging training while presenting new techniques, and recruiting/hiring staff as needed.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide organizational leadership by demonstrating AAUM core values: All In, Serving Heart and Solution Seeker, and helping other staff members demonstrate those values.

  • Work with AAUM staff members to gain a clear and consistent understanding of the details of the strategic plan and feel equal ownership of every piece of it, including pieces for which there is no direct responsibility.

  • Be inclusive and collaborative with every other member of the staff and every other team. Operate as a critical contributing member of the staff to complete objectives in many different areas in order to move the whole organization toward the strategic plan.

  • Support University Relations efforts by demonstrating AAUM value to campus units/partners (i.e., schools/colleges, campuses).

  • Staff team and Alumni Association events.

  • Provide staff support to the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, its committees, and other volunteers.

  • Coordinate special projects as assigned or required.

  • Participate in Alumni Association and other University committees as required.

  • Participate in team and staff meetings.

  • Share knowledge through internal communication.

  • Support the Alumni Association’s vision of becoming more relevant to all alumni.

  • Remain current with respect to technology and the University’s educational resources.

Supervision Received

Direct supervision is received from the Executive Director of Marketing & Communications. 

Supervision Exercised

Supervision is exercised over the Digital Manager and Web Applications team. May coordinate the work of temporary staff.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience as a User experience designer/ architect or user interface designer or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • A portfolio that demonstrates the ability to create compelling user experiences that factor in business goals, developmental capabilities, design standards and user needs.

  • Experience creating conceptual models, site maps, interaction flows, design patterns, UI specifications, and interactive prototypes (e.g., Axure, Sketch, InVision, Adobe XD)

  • In-depth knowledge of performance metrics and ability to lead stakeholders in understanding metrics in order to make decisions. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presentation skills. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in human computer interaction, user interface design, design planning or similar field is preferred. 

  • Blend of corporate and agency experience is a plus.
