Wolverine Pathways Math Instructor Compensation: $22-35/hour
This is a part-time temporary position. We require your full commitment to the program session dates for which you are applying.
The University of Michigan Wolverine Pathways was established to increase the high school graduation rate, college acceptance, and retention rates of academically promising scholars. Wolverine Pathways math instructors will provide exemplary service and expertise in their given subject area to the communities of Ypsilanti, Southfield and/or Detroit. They will facilitate the virtual academic program for highly motivated rising 8th and rising 9th grade scholars.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) at the University of Michigan leads and supports university-wide initiatives focused on the recruitment of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body, while fostering an inclusive and equitable University community. Our office also engages surrounding communities in mission-focused, mutually beneficial partnerships. In support of this overarching effort, three units within our office - the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO), Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), and Wolverine Pathways - all work closely with ODEI to further the strategic vision of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Michigan.
Instructors will facilitate the mathematical inquiry and learning for highly motivated rising 8th and rising 9th grade scholars. Duties include:
- facilitating synchronous whole group and/or half group sessions that cultivate community and norm-setting and that orient scholars to and transition them between math activities
- monitoring and/or facilitating synchronous small group scholar-led sessions that support mathematical stretch, problem-solving, and independence
- providing one-on-one and small group math tutoring for scholars who require additional support
- engaging with remote math lead and/or receiving professional development or coaching with remote math lead as is warranted?
Instructors must attend mandatory professional development and all required dates.

- 5 hrs/day
- 1 hour lunch
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related specialty
- Experience with inquiry-based teaching styles
- Experience teaching or tutoring Algebra I through Pre-Calculus (i,e, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus)
- Experience teaching virtually on platforms such as Zoom
- Have excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Desire to be an advocate for the development of students
- Be dynamic and creative in the implementation of lessons
- Be able to attend pre-session training/professional development session(s)
- Specific ability-based competencies include: communicating with diverse groups; displaying tact and courtesy; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; being attentive to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Familiarity with platforms such as Desmos and Jamboard
- Certification in specialty/grade level
- At least 2 years’ experience in selected subject area
- Rated “highly effective” on school evaluations
- If a high school teacher, experience with ACT/SAT preparation facilitation is preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of diversity principles
- Experience in serving underrepresented communities
- Classes of <25 or <25:1 scholar to instructor ratio.
- All scholars are application vetted.
