The Ginsberg Center cultivates and stewards equitable partnerships between communities and the University of Michigan in order to advance social change through service, democratic participation, and community-engaged learning. The Ginsberg Center works in close partnership with the Office of the Provost and is located in Student Life, a division committed to facilitating student learning and the development of the whole student while cultivating a diverse and inclusive campus community. Through our programs, services, facilities and partnerships, Student Life provides opportunities for students' transformation and enriches their education.

Job Summary

Provides overall vision and strategic leadership as director of the Ginsberg Center to ensure that the organization fulfills its mission. Serves as a leader both internally and externally to build relationships and advance policy conversations. Employs a collaborative style to bring vision, creativity, energy, and credibility to the Center and embraces the potential for the Center to create significant social change and exhibit national leadership in the areas of student civic engagement, service learning, and community-engaged scholarship.

Overall responsibility for and authority over planning, organizing, developing, administering, evaluating, and budgeting for the Ginsberg Center. Works across all parts of the campus to encourage faculty and students to engage with community partners, in order to contribute to student and faculty civic participation and leadership and a robust democracy. University efforts include integrating community-engaged learning into co-curricular and curricular offerings and promoting community-engaged scholarship for faculty.  Community efforts include creating university-community partnerships, informed by community priorities, reciprocity, and equity.

Responsibilities*

Leadership/Administration – 80%

  • Lead a large, multi-faceted community service and learning office charged with developing and promoting a campus-wide vision and direction to advance community-engaged scholarship and learning, positioning the Ginsberg Center within the institution and nationally as an innovative leader in this domain.  Work with diverse constituents within and beyond the institution to advance social change efforts (students, faculty, administrators, staff, and communities).

  • Community/University Partnership with Community Technical Assistance Collaborative (CTAC)
    • Focuses on supporting nonprofits, schools, and governmental organizations around data and evaluation to build capacity, while meeting the educational goals of students. We are invested in sustainable solutions that advance the impact of our partners’ work toward key quality of life outcomes, and bolster their capacity to tell their stories, and secure funding.
  • School or College/Center Partnership with Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning's Public Design Corps
    • Provides students with the opportunity to engage in socially-driven design, broadening the field's social impact. Helping participants establish a foundational understanding of community engagement and co-design methods. Our team provided matchmaking support, consultation and helped prepare students to partner with communities.
  • Employ and execute a collective impact approach to facilitate large-scale change through cross-sector coordination, with an emphasis on the needs identified by the Southeast Michigan community and the possibilities available through the University’s global reputation and reach.

Examples:

  • Created the Housing Affordability Regional Collaborative (HARC) with partners at Washtenaw Housing Alliance, Ann Arbor Housing Commission, the Office of Community and Economic Development, and Avalon Housing. Campus-community partners have identified three priority work areas that are critical to creating a more affordable Washtenaw: Storytelling & Communications; Research & Data; Organizing & Coalition Building. Collaborative projects are under way in each of these priorities.
  • Provides campus and conference leadership for the Big Ten Voting Challenge, a nonpartisan initiative launched in 2017, to spur civic engagement and encourage more students across the Big Ten to head to the polls on Election Day. The 2020 Umichvotes campus coalition involved all three U-M campuses, more than 20 units and campus organizations, the Ann Arbor City Clerk's office, and support from the Michigan Secretary of State's office and numerous national organizations.
  • Connecting Michigan will provide a coordinated, broadly accessible, technology-enabled infrastructure for community and civic engagement. This initiative, currently in process, is a partnership between the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Vice President for Government Relations, and Student Life's Ginsberg Center, with ITS, the Center for Academic Innovation, and other key stakeholders. It builds upon current networks of practitioners, and coordinates, where appropriate, existing decentralized data inventories in order to advance U-M’s mission and amplify its contributions to the public good.

 

  •  Advance a vision of the organization grounded in Ginsberg and Divisional mission and in good practices in student affairs in order to provide leadership in community-engaged scholarship and service learning.  Educate and assist students in developing abilities within classroom and co-curricular settings to reflect on and integrate learning, shape a philosophy of life regarding their private and public goals, and build the knowledge and skills base to effectively and respectfully engage with the community.  Develop and implement strategies to strengthen community-engaged curriculum, research, and public scholarship toward mutual benefit.
  •  Manage a budget of approximately $1.5 M; work closely with the Division of Student Affairs’ Development Officer to mobilize funding from a variety of sources.
  •  Manage through evidence to ensure alignment to institutional priorities, appropriate long-range strategic direction, continuous improvement, and integrity of service provision.  Utilize applied research such as needs assessments, CAS and other professional standards review, regular satisfaction and outcomes assessment, and other evaluation mechanisms. Gather, analyze, synthesize, interpret, and report information related to critical issues in community service and learning and community-engaged scholarship.
  • Utilizing knowledge of social identity and social justice, ensure maximum participation of diverse campus communities to create a positive learning environment for all students.  Includes informed perspective regarding issues of race, ethnicity, sex, gender orientation and expression, sexual orientation, social class, ability, and national status, as examples.
  • Advocate for the advancement of equitable community engagement across the institution. Collaborate within and beyond Student Life to integrate community-engaged service, teaching, and research into the broader educational mission, notably initiating collaborative relationships with faculty leaders and senior administrators of U-M’s schools, colleges, and major academic departments.
  • Participate as an active member of the extended Division of Student Life leadership team and Divisional and University committees, as appropriate.
  • Maintain collaborative strategic partnerships outlined in MOU’s and related agreements and engage with the Office of the Provost, Vice President of Government Relations, and other Executive Officers, as relevant.
  • Oversee publishing and strategic direction of the Michigan Journal for Community Service Learning.
  • Maintain rigorous accountability standards by assessing and evaluating the impact of the Center’s work on communities and student learning through formative and summative assessment efforts
  • Provide informed commentary as an expert on community engagement and service learning.  Employ political savvy in representing the unit.  Provide professional leadership via professional associations, conference presentations, and publications, as appropriate.

 Supervision – 20%

  • Hire, train, supervise, and promote staff responsible for major areas of center work and campus collaboration, including community-university partnerships, marketing and communication, faculty engagement and support, and the Michigan Journal for Community Service Learning.
  • Oversee and collaborate with organizational leadership and team to execute on a broad scope of functions providing significant levels of service to internal campus constituencies as well as to external constituents (consisting primarily of community organizations and government agencies), and widening the Ginsberg Center's scope of influence.
  • Work with staff to clearly and define their roles and work in collaboration with one another in areas of intersection; including establishing agreed-upon learning outcomes and measures of success.
  • Identify professional development opportunities and areas for growth with staff.
  • Work with staff to ensure that initiatives are grounded in and apply current theory to practice, and utilize practice to further inform theory.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Education, Community Organizing, Management, or related discipline with an understanding of the theories related to working with faculty, college students, and community partners 
  • 7+ years leadership and management experience with increasing responsibility, preferably within a large and complex organization
  • 7+ years of experience and understanding of organizational development, resource stewardship (accounting, budgeting, purchasing, revenue generation, personnel management, facilities management), ethical principles, and research and assessment methods
  • 7+ years of related work with community and academic partners. Demonstrated ability to negotiate arrangements that are equitable for all stakeholders
  • Proven track record of innovation and visionary leadership; demonstrated ability to develop a vision and translate that vision into action
  • Proven capacity to work with diverse constituencies to achieve a common agenda
  • Result-orientation, with demonstrated ability to set ambitious goals, lead and motivate a diverse team, and demonstrate measurable results
  • Strong organizational and management skills, including a proven record hiring talented and diverse staff, developing their skills, delegating appropriately, and holding staff accountable to achieving their goals
  • Experience utilizing facilitation strategies and pedagogical methods to advance engaged learning agenda
  • Experience working on social justice education/education for social change and civic engagement initiatives
  • Knowledge of current needs, trends, legal concerns, and other issues in the area of community-engaged teaching and learning

Desired Qualifications*

  • Doctoral degree in Education, or related field 
  • Understanding of a large decentralized campus, and the ability to achieve desired outcomes
  • Experience working with a diverse student body
  • Experience/knowledge of non-profit/government sector
  • Ability to navigate the higher education environment

Additional Information

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility

 Consulting on and tracking budgets up to $2,000,000 required.

Working conditions

On occasion, will be expected to work evening hours or weekends to support activities

Direct reports

Associate Director of the Ginsberg Center; Associate Director of Teaching and Research; functional supervision on projects as necessary.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
