Faculty in Anti-racist Health Equity, Health Informatics and Data Science
The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) seeks qualified mid- to senior-level career faculty candidates (Associate Professor to Professor rank) to broaden existing scholarship within the school and the U-M community in the area of Anti-racist Health Equity, Health Informatics and/or Data Science. Areas of research and teaching may include, but are not limited to:
- Racial bias and unintended racist consequences in data, algorithms, and technologies that enable health care;
- Point-of-care informatics interventions to reduce healthcare providers’ implicit racial biases and enhance their structural competence; and
- Community-driven, technology-enabled models of healthcare delivery that address racism as a social determinant of health and empower racialized communities in service/intervention design.
We especially welcome scholars who have demonstrated expertise in anti-racist research methods, health equity, interdisciplinary scholarship experience, and a commitment to translating research into practice.
This position is part of a new faculty cluster focused on Racial Justice in Healthcare: Informatics and Data-Driven Approaches. This cluster hire of five faculty (one within each of five units) will focus on using informatics and data science methods to detect, understand, and reduce structural racism within healthcare, and racial healthcare disparities. Faculty will he hired in the following units: (1) the School of Information; (2) College of Pharmacy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy; (3) University of Michigan Medical School, Department of Learning Health Sciences; (4) School of Nursing, Department of Systems, Populations and Leadership; and (5) School of Public Health, Department of Health Management and Policy. There will be additional support for cross-school collaborations within the cluster from the National Center for Institutional Diversity. This cluster is part of a university-wide faculty hiring initiative in anti-racism. Over the next three years, the university will hire at least 20 faculty members with scholarly expertise in racial inequality and structural racism.
Job duties include research, teaching, and service. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Developing a strong network across campus to advance research and methodologic expertise in the area of anti-racism, social justice and/or health equity
- Seeking outside funding to support their research
- Conducting scholarly research resulting in publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, edited books, books, and conference proceedings
- Teaching in UMSNs academic programs: BSN, MSN, DNP, PhD
- Mentoring students for independent studies, master’s projects and theses, and doctoral dissertations.
- Providing service to the school, University, and the broader academic community by way of committee work, journal editing, and other various opportunities
*Doctorally prepared. Completion of a post-doctoral fellowship is highly desired.
*For nursing PhD’s, a current MI nursing license is required or eligibility for a nursing license in the State of Michigan.
*Demonstrated research in anti-racism, social justice and/or health equity areas. We are particularly interested in individuals who are able to work within a multidisciplinary environment.
*Prior to start date must be in compliance with all health requirements including standard precautions such as Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, orientations, licenses/certifications, policies and procedures both internal and external to the University for your assigned classroom(s) and/or clinical site(s) and/or research site(s).
*Admirable record of first-author, data-based, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations.
*Demonstrate excellent communication, networking and relationship building skills.
*Demonstrated competence in scholarly activity.

*Sustained record of excellence in teaching, including experience with advanced students;
*Sustained and growing record of scholarly eminence which advances the frontier of knowledge;
*A reputation among the candidate’s colleagues and peers throughout the nation and preferably internationally for outstanding and continuing achievements in their field of expertise.
*A reputation, supported by documented external evaluation, which recognizes the presence of leadership and the quality of research activities, publications, and contributions to the profession in comparison with other professors.
*A continuing record of recognized accomplishments in academic, professional and community service.
