The University of Michigan Law School’s Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse,, is seeking an attorney with experience in civil rights litigation and/or criminal justice reform to build and foster collaborations with advocacy organizations, write several white papers about how to use litigation experience and documents to inform criminal justice policy improvements, and supervise law students and undergraduates working on expanding the Clearinghouse’s coverage.

The Clearinghouse is a web-based resource for civil rights researchers, advocates, and policymakers. This is a two-year grant-funded position to help the Clearinghouse revamp, reach new audiences, and become more effective. The successful candidate will help lead the Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse under the supervision of Professor Margo Schlanger. He or she will develop subject-matter knowledge, cultivate professional relationships, and author legal/policy papers. The position involves significant responsibility, independence, and flexibility.

  • Build collaborations with criminal justice reform and civil rights litigators.
  • Write several white papers exemplifying how the Clearinghouse’s resources can be used to locate and assess best practices in criminal justice reform. Each white paper will cover an immediate topic (e.g., Hepatitis C treatment, COVID-19 best practices, solitary confinement reform, gender-affirming accommodations and treatment) and also serve as a demonstration for how advocates can use Clearinghouse resources to learn from and build on prior reform efforts.
  • Assisting in hiring and supervising student research assistants.
  • Assist with other assigned aspects of Clearinghouse management and work.

Required Qualifications*

  • J.D. required.
  • Demonstrated interest in civil rights litigation and/or criminal justice reform.
  • Experience interacting professionally with attorneys and other advocates.
  • Outstanding writing and research skills.
  • Self-direction; entrepreneurial temperament.
  • Several years’ legal experience preferred.
