Job Summary

The Associate Director will provide strategic leadership and direction in the delivery of a range of programs and services designed to enhance the multicultural, educational, and social experiences of undergraduate, graduate and professional students living in Michigan Housing through the lens of collaborating with academic partners. This position directly oversees graduate and professional living learning communities and undergraduate theme communities, in addition to the Michigan Housing components of Michigan Learning Communities (referred to collectively as academic living learning opportunities).,The Associate Director is Residence Education’s liaison with the academic community of the university through working directly with academic partners, staff and faculty to provide students with a supportive and dynamic on-campus living learning environment.


Academic Initiatives - 50%

  • Establish and maintain partnerships across the university to foster academic connections for undergraduate, graduate and professional residential students
  • Design and implement on-going and one-time opportunities for students to enhance their academic connections outside of the classroom
  • Develop long-range strategic planning for academic living learning opportunities within  Michigan Housing
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive assessment plan for Residence Education to include and not be limited to evaluating the effectiveness of all MLCs, theme communities, special living options, academic connection and leadership development opportunities. Utilize assessment data to identify improvement opportunities, strategies to enhance the student experience, and guide ongoing program development.
  • Meet regularly with academic living learning opportunity  professional staff to provide direction, leadership and information, and develop strategies to enhance programs
  • Facilitate cooperative work with Residence Education staff involved in academic living learning opportunities
  • Collaborate with campus partners to develop and implement new academic living learning opportunities
  • Support Spring/Summer operations with an academic connection to students enrolled at the University of Michigan in the Fall

Student Engagement - 20%

  • Collaborate with partners in academic living learning opportunities to align program goals with Residence Education core values
  • Oversee student engagement opportunities that will expand academic connections for students outside of the classroom and leadership experiences within residential communities
  • Collaborates on the implementation of academic program offerings to students
  • Serve on university committees related to position responsibilities

Supervision - 20%

  • Recruit, train, hire and supervise Assistant Director for Thematic CommunitiesAssistant Director for Student Staff Selection and Training, and Assistant Director for Graduate Academic Initiatives
  • Provide functional oversight to professional staff related to their residence hall and apartment community specific work with academic living learning opportunities
  • Support academic living learning opportunities  during the Student Staff and RA Selection process in collaboration with the professional staff in Michigan Housing
  • Oversees training and development of professional and student staff, and RAs affiliated with academic living learning opportunities and overall opportunities for academic connections

Administration - 10%

  • Participate as a member of Residence Education Central Staff
  • Work collaboratively with Associate and Assistant Directors in Residential Programs and Michigan Housing to ensure proper communication among organizational areas
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide support/guidance with other members of Central Staff for Residence Education

Required Qualifications*

  • A Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Educational Administration, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years of post-graduate full-time, progressively responsible professional experience in a college or university setting
  • Minimum of three (3) years of leadership experience with full-time supervision, student conduct, crisis response
  • Demonstrated skill in developing and sustaining collaborative and culturally inclusive relationships. Considerable leadership experience with supervision, student conduct, and crisis response.
  • A minimum of two (2) years post-graduate full-time experience in the administration of living-learning programs

Desired Qualifications*

  • A Doctorate degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Educational Administration, or a related field
  • Experience in housing and residential life setting
  • Experience in the development and implementation of new programmatic housing offerings
  • Experience working collaboratively with campus offices and departments
  • The ability to communicate and relate effectively with diverse students, staff and faculty
  • Ability to develop and implement an organizational vision, strategy and goals

Additional Information

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility

Oversight of a budget of $150,000.

Some evenings and weekends are required

Physical requirements

May need to move packages of up to fifty pounds to and from various areas in the community, including shelving units, package storage locations, and mailrooms. The incumbent is required to frequently travel around campus to engage with campus partners and students.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
