Job Summary

The Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology is looking for a fulltime Research Lab Tech Associate/Intermediate. The Lab’s research focuses on embryonic development and the regulation of propiomelanocortin (Pomc) gene expression in the hypothalamus. We also study the role of POMC neurons in energy homeostasis, weight regulation, and feeding behavior using mutant mouse models. The qualified applicant will assist the PI, and a senior research investigator, and graduate students with current ongoing projects and receive in turn, an excellent opportunity to learn new techniques, develop protocols, and gain exposure to a rich research environment within the North Campus Research Complex and the Caswell Diabetes Institute. The candidate will also benefit from actively participating in weekly Lab meetings and attending relevant seminars.

Responsibilities*

Experimental responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Maintain multiple mouse colonies including breeding, tailing and tagging. Small animal handling, injections, perfusions and dissections. Weekly or daily observation and recording of data such as food and water consumption, body weight, and body composition by NMR in experimental animals.  DNA preparation from bacterial cultures, plasmid and genomic cloning, RNA and DNA preparation from mouse tissues and PCR reactions. Tissue sectioning; fresh frozen, perfused, or paraffin-embedded. Routine histological staining and immunohistochemistry.

Non-experimental responsibilities include:

Maintain and update freezer, liquid N2, chemical and equipment inventories.  Prepare general lab solutions and autoclave glassware and media.

Level of position will be determined by the experience of the selected candidate.

Required Qualifications*

Minimum of B.S. degree or equivalent in biological sciences or related field; neuroscience or molecular biology highly desired. 0-2 years work experience. Previous laboratory experience handling mice and maintaining mouse colonies including genotyping by PCR is essential. This position requires a focused and highly motivated candidate who can initiate and complete assigned tasks independently. The applicant must be able to follow detailed written or verbal instructions from the PI and other senior researchers in the Lab. This position also requires good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize assignments and maintain precise record keeping habits with attention to detail.

  • Intermediate Level-  1-3 years experience

  • Associate Level-  0-1 years experience

Desired Qualifications*

BS in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, genetics, engineering or any related disciplines.

Former experiences in lab environment.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday 9am -5:pm with some flexibility may be needed occasionally on weekends
