Job Summary

The Coordinator of Advising Communication and Engagement within the Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center supports and engages undergraduate students in pursuit of a liberal arts degree. SAA plays a critical role in the undergraduate educational mission of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan. As the largest college on the Ann Arbor campus, LSA serves over 17,000 undergraduate students in over 100 degree programs. This position is primarily on-campus with possible allowances for occasional remote work after the probationary period, and reports to the Associate Director for Student Communications.

LSA Student Academic Affairs (SAA) engages students, fosters their success, and upholds academic standards in support of the liberal arts and the University of Michigan community. As a community of over sixty full-time higher education professionals, and in collaboration with key partners across the college and beyond, SAA aspires to be a valued resource and leader in support of the academic and personal experience of undergraduate students at the university. Overall, SAA is responsible for helping LSA undergraduates achieve the expectations and rewards of the liberal arts and science education afforded by the college. To accomplish this responsibility, LSA SAA is organized into the following areas: Office of the Assistant Dean, Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center, Academic Opportunities & Support, and Academic Policy & Technology.

Responsibilities*

The Coordinator of Advising Communication and Engagement in the Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of an array of innovative and engaging student programs and initiatives, as well as supporting the creation of relevant student communications. Working in partnership with the Associate Director of Student Communication and the broader Newnan leadership team, the Coordinator will help organize a variety of student engagement activities and events that assist advisors in supporting the academic and personal experiences of undergraduate students in collaboration with the Director and Associate Directors, the Coordinator will also have shared responsibility for the ongoing assessment of programmatic efforts.

The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing the communication and engagement that professional advisors and college staff have with undergraduate students through their knowledge of student marketing and communication best practices and trends. They will be expected to build relationships with advisors and administrative staff within the center, as well as across the college and university, in order to support the undergraduate student experience. They will also be expected to cultivate and contribute to a culture that is welcoming, supportive, and responsive to the diverse identities of our students and staff.

In addition to developing and supporting student-facing communications and engagement, the Coordinator is expected to maintain an assigned caseload of students. They will collaborate with a team of academic advisors within Newnan to provide support for students in the college and across the university, including the development and implementation of advising information, workshops, and initiatives.

Coordination of Student Communication and Engagement (50%)

  • In collaboration with Newnan leadership, coordinate and deliver programming and engagement activities for undergraduate students
  • Assist in the development of student-focused communications from the advising center, including mass emails and departmental/college news and events
  • Support collaborative student-facing events within Student Academic Affairs, including the Major/Minor Expo
  • Assist with the maintenance of student-facing information and digital assets on center and unit webpages and platforms
  • Work with Newnan leadership on the exploration, development, and implementation of new communication strategies (e.g. social media, targeted student communications)
  • Collaborate across the college and university (e.g. LSA UGED, ONSP, Student Life) on the planning and dissemination of student information
  • Assist in the ongoing assessment of student communication and engagement efforts

General Advising (40%)

  • General advising for a cohort of LSA students - first year and continuing students
  • Assist students in their self-assessment of interests and skills pertinent to academic work, co-curricular interests, and career options while making connections between their coursework and the Liberal Arts
  • Provide accurate information about College courses and curriculum, policies, procedures, resources, and programs, making referrals when appropriate
  • Advise students regarding course selection during the Summer, Fall, and Winter Orientation and Registration programs
  • Maintain contact through email with advisees, including responding to progress reports, outreach to students in academic difficulty, and alerting students to options and new opportunities consistent with their growth and development
  • Maintain timely and accurate records of interactions with students, referrals, exceptions to standard procedures, and decisions affecting degree progress
  • Review, troubleshoot, and resolve student concerns - advising, degree exceptions, graduation requirements
  • Communicate with faculty and other administrators as needed

Newnan/SAA Administrative Responsibilities (10%)

  • Serve as a liaison to two or more UM academic departments, and one or more schools, colleges or administrative units
  • Lead the design and/or delivery of workshops, group advising, educational programs, etc.
  • Develop and maintain print and web resources
  • Represent Newnan and/or the college at recruitment and retention activities and events
  • Serve on committees, task forces, and working groups as time and interests allow
  • Exercise initiative in the ongoing efforts of the organization to improve the quality of service

Required Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in a liberal arts field, higher education, or area of study affording understanding of the undergraduate student experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with at least three years academic advising experience in a college or university setting
  • Experience with student communications and/or marketing, including the use of marketing and/or communication software and platforms (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and HTML)
  • Demonstrated development and implementation of innovative student programs and/or initiatives
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, including experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and identities
  • Proven ability to successfully work in a collaborative team environment
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and respectful working relationships with students, staff, and faculty
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to maintain the integrity of confidential materials and student information

Desired Qualifications*

  • Ed.D or Ph.D and at least five years academic advising experience in a college or university setting
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Evidence of national or regional involvement in the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), or a similar organization or effort related to higher education advising
  • Knowledge of the purposes and objectives of a liberal arts education
  • Familiarity with higher education student information systems and their applications in academic advising

Salary is commensurate with direct experience and demonstrated past performance results.
