Job Summary

The Department of Communication and Media seeks candidates for a Lecturer I position to teach one course at 33.3% appointment effort during the Fall 2021 semester (starting August 30 through December 31, 2021).  This is not a tenure-track position.  The successful candidate will teach one course: COMM 370: Social Networks.  This course introduces the theoretical perspectives and practical applications of the study of social networks, including friendship networks, political discussion networks, social support networks, organizational networks, disease transmission networks, and online social networks. Students learn concepts, theories, and the impact of emerging media and communication technologies on the creation, maintenance, and expansion of social networks.


In addition to the teaching responsibilities provided in the job summary, the lecturer is expected to attend course meetings, hold office hours, and handle routine matters related to instruction.

Required Qualifications*

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Communication and Media, Communication Studies or closely related field.  Previous experience teaching introductory and advanced courses in communication and media at the college level is required.  Previous experience teaching writing intensive courses is required.

Desired Qualifications*

A PhD in Communication and Media or Communication Studies is preferred. Candidates should have a record of excellence in instruction at the college level teaching introductory and advanced courses in communication and media.  We especially seek candidates with a breadth of experience teaching undergraduate courses including writing intensive courses, and courses on social networks.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
