What You'll Do

Requirements Gathering:  Interact with customers (such as analysts, physicians, care managers, staff at all levels of physician organizations, etc.) to assess requirements.  Collaborate with the technical team to define solution to address requirements.  Analyze and document needs in technical specifications.  Maintain existing measure specifications and report designs, and generate new ones for emerging use cases. 

Data Analysis:  Perform data analysis and problem solving in a complex healthcare environment.  Generate test plans based on templates to assess new data.  Collaborate with the team to ensure complete testing is delivered.  Complete data investigation and document results in the test plan once data is received.  Ensure data conforms to specification and that the content is expected.  Identify and resolve data quality issues. Understand the data and respond to questions on content and use of the data, as needed. 

Customer Service:  Handle customer queries in a timely manner and provide resolution and any supporting documentation needed.  Document interactions and status in the MDC tracking tool.   This position will provide data analytic support to internal and external customers and support Physician Organizations in assessment of reports.  Assist with on site (or virtual) meetings to explain report results and identify areas for performance improvement. 

Communication: Articulate status of work to leadership, team members, and customers.  Excellent communication skills needed to support customers and partners including empathetic listening and confident speaking abilities.

Process Development:  Maintain current operational documentation and enhance as requirements evolve.

Who We Are

The Michigan Data Collaborative (MDC) is a data collection, enrichment, and provisioning group in Michigan Medicine at the University of Michigan. We support care delivery transformation initiatives across the state, with goals to achieve improvements in population health, enhancements to patient experience and care delivery, and reductions in overall healthcare costs. We are hiring a dynamic team member to support our mission of helping providers to improve care delivery using data and informatics. The Business Systems Analyst works with business partners and users to identify and needs, documents requirements, and translates them to data and informatics based solutions.  This can include activities such as data analysis, report and dashboard design, data validation, measures definition and testing, and end user support.

Requirements for Senior Position

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Business Administration, Computer Science, Health Informatics, Information Technology, or equivalent degree in another field together with related experience. 
  • Applicants MUST have 5+ years of experience in the healthcare industry, preferably in the state of Michigan, with either Payer or Provider organizations, or consulting organizations working with Payers and/or Providers. 
  • Applicants MUST have experience working with data, defining data mapping, and analyzing healthcare data.
  • Five plus years of experience in requirements gathering and data analysis
  • Three plus years of experience resolving complex integration issues involving multiple technologies and business areas
  • Experience with understanding and documenting workflows and clinical processes, as well as creating data-driven solutions to support these processes.
  • Experience in implementing healthcare solutions.

Requirements for Intermediate Position

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Business Administration or equivalent degree in another field together with related experience. 
  • Applicants MUST have 3+ years of experience in the healthcare industry, preferably in the state of Michigan, with either Payer or Provider organizations, or consulting organizations working with Payers and/or Providers. 
  • Three plus years of experience in requirements gathering and data analysis
  • Three plus years of experience resolving complex integration issues involving multiple technologies and business areas

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of chronic disease definitions and research.
  • Knowledge of population management, evidence-based care reporting, healthcare cost and utilization reporting, and patient centered medical home concepts.
  • Understanding of various data model types (relational, dimensional, etc).
  • Experience working with BI tools and reporting packages such as Oracle Business Intelligence, Business Objects, and/or Crystal Reports.
  • Experience working with ETL tools such as Informatica.
  • Knowledge of the UM computing environment.
  • Ability to plan and facilitate meetings with diverse participants.

Work Locations

Due to the COVID-19 climate, we are currently working remotely. If the selected candidate is not in/near the Ann Arbor area, there is the possibility to have this position be permanently or mostly remote when staff are allowed back in office.

Remote staff are provided with a monitor, laptop and related accessories. Office equipment such as desk, chair, and printer are not provided for remote work and staff must supply their own reliable internet access. Basic supplies such as paper and pens, are stocked at the business location and are available to remote staff for pick-up should they choose.

There may be occasions where the staff member will need to report the office in Ann Arbor, including meetings, training, computer or technology requirements, or to complete work that is not possible to handle remotely.

The candidate will be offered the position at the senior or intermediate level based on their overall qualifications and experience in areas directly relevant to the responsibilities of the position.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
